PM suggests US$80 million for airport as calypso topic

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, March 13, IWN — Calypsonians struggling for a topic to sing about for Vincy Mas 2013 has been given a suggestion.

They might want to consider singing about Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves’ raising the US$80 million needed to complete the Argyle international airport this year.

“I am asking the fellas who singing calypso, … this is a subject for them. … They say that Ralph couldn’t get the 80 million but De Comrade get it. They say it not possible but De Comrade get it,” Gonsalves told Parliament on Monday.

“I don’t know how the chorus going go, or how the road march going go, but I giving them a subject,” the Prime Minister further said, in an apparent light-hearted comment, while explaining how the US$80 million is to be raised.

“I [am] giving them a subject. They could play it J’ouvert but, if it ain’t Soca Monarch, this is on the road; this is a Road March tune, this is a road march tune. And, if it happens, I bring a band and I invite everybody in Parliament to be part of that band.

“Together now! And let us live together, let us live wonderfully, because, if you do that, you might be able to take the airport off the table as a discussion item for the next contest. But if you continue to oppose it, it might be a discussion item and people will punish those who were standing askance to it and embrace those who had the foresight,” he further said.

The EC$652 million airport is schedule to be completed this year and to become operational by 2014.

But Gonsalves on Monday reiterated that work might go on into the early months of 2014.

He said the money is to be raised from loans, sales of state lands, and the transfer of departure taxes to the International Airport Development Company, which is responsible for constructing the airport.

Vincy Mas 2013 is slated for June 28 to July 9.

The calypso semi-finals are scheduled for June 21 and the finals of July 7.

  1. I hope GONSALVES has got better plan than “the money is to be raised from loans, sales of state lands, and the transfer of departure taxes to the International Airport Development Company”.

Why? because it will take multi millions of dollars every year to operate and service the airport. Also airlines will require subsidizing for flying into SVG, like they did for 20 years to fly into Barbados.

Where will that money come from? we do not have the white beaches and tourist infrastructure to generate such funds.

We will also be required to start paying back the numerous loans that have been taken against the airport.

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM, WE ARE BROKE, SKINT, INSOLVENT, CLEANED OUT, BUST.

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM?

  2. When the BIGGEST CROWD in the HISTORY of St. Vincent and the Grenadines WITNESSES the OPENING of the INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT at ARGYLE, there will be an ANGRY VOICE in the CROWD SCREAMING to be HEARD.

As the CROWD LOWERS their PATRIOTIC VOICES and CELEBRATORY MOOD, they hear this LONE VOICE in the CROWD SAYING……

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM, WE ARE BROKE, SKINT, INSOLVENT, CLEANED OUT, BUST.

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM?

    POOR PETER.

    See you around, BUB.

  3. VINCYNEEDSASHOWERPOWA, well I am sure your right, there will a huge crowd, many paid, free T shirts, music, free food, promises of work, many bussed and trucked. But regardless of the reason or . Besides all that it will be an amazing feat, regardless of cost, we all need to see what we have been ripped off for. Even if everyone in SVG turns up, it doesn’t alter the facts.

The facts are, that our grand-children’s grand-children will be paying back debts generated by this project. Debts that we were told would not exist, lies told to the Vincentian people. We were told when the airport was finished there would be no debt left for the tax payers and the Vincentian people, all lies, dreadful lies.

We were told that there was a ‘coalition of the willing’ paying for and others supplying free services and free materials, all lies, dreadful lies. We were told that the Venezuelans were paying the wages of the Cubans, all lies, dreadful lies. The Venezuelans paid for some of the plant and machinery, SVG has paid for the rest, I now doubt that Venezuela paid for anything.

We have taken out loans everywhere to fund the airport, loans that there must be doubt of our ability to repay. The coalition of the willing turned out to be a coalition of the unwilling and a whole bunch of lies.

The only real friends that we have are the Taiwanese, because we know exactly where we stand, there is transparency that does not exist with all the other members of the coalition of the willing, all that Marxist scum, who are scroungers and have taken advantage of the Vincentian people.

Now we learn there are no contracts between us and Cuba or Venezuela, just a nod, wink and a handshake, not even letters of understanding or undertakings. This must amount to gross dereliction of duty by Gonsalves, who as an attorney should know better. The problem in my mind is that Gonsalves is a self declared liar, we therefore just don’t know the truth.

Whatever has happened to date will be compounded by the enormous loss’s that this airport will generate, by the hour, day, week, month and year. Where will the money come from? St. Vincent will never be able to pay the debt, never mind the operational and trading loss’s.

VINCYNEEDSASHOWERPOWA, there was not a job on the airport project that could not have been done by a local Vincentian or a Vincentian from the Diaspora. We have people with the skills and experience to do anything that the Cubans could have done.
The difference is that local Vincentians are paid 60% less than paid to Cubans, and the money paid to a Vincentian would be spent in Saint Vincent and that would also of generated a 50% tax and duty revenue for the government.
We the Vincentian people have been shafted because of one mans political beliefs and associations. I just hope that at some time in the future you come here to Saint Vincent for the welcome that you deserve, for supporting this huge rip-off of the Vincentian people. You VP are as much to blame as all the other liars in this huge conspiratoral fooling of the whole state of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM, WE ARE BROKE, SKINT, INSOLVENT, CLEANED OUT, BUST, ROBBED OF THE TRUTH.

WHERE WILL ALL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL ALL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL ALL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL ALL THE MONEY COME FROM?

WHERE WILL ALL THE MONEY COME FROM?

  5. Robin Hood or Robbing Basthood, taking the land from the Argyle farmers, using the land for the airport, then not paying those land owners for their lands, no interest, no payment, no respect.

PAY THE 60 FOR THEIR LANDS!
