KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, Feb. 28, IWN – Owner of Nice Radio Douglas DeFreitas, citing spiritual inspiration, says he has written to Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves asking him not to pursue other defamation cases against the station.

Gonsalves said on Monday that he has instructed his lawyer to pursue two other judgements against the station that are ready for execution.

He made the announcement on the same day that the station paid him $206,000 for defamation, in a case dating back almost 10 years.

The money was raised through donations from listeners to the station, under the Save Nice Radio Appeal.

De Freitas on Wednesday dedicated 12 hours — 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. — to programming thanking God that the station was able to pay the money and avoid going into receivership.

Listeners called in to pray, sing, and praise God on behalf of the station.

DeFreitas spoke of his letter to Gonsalves during an exhortation sometime after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

He said he was led by the Holy Spirit on Monday to dedicate the 12 hours of programming on Wednesday to praising God.

He said he was also moved to write to Gonsalves, his cousin, asking him not to pursue the judgement.

De Freitas said he called Gonsalves on Wednesday to inform him about the letter.

“We had some pleasant talk, but we had some disagreeing talk. … So he said he was not going to say anything about how I write him and I said, ‘No, you don’t have to; because, in the spirit’s prompting, I have to declare it, I have to move it into the atmosphere and this situation that exists.’

“And so, we chat. There are little things we disagree on, big things we disagree on,” De Freitas said, adding that the Prime Minister said he was looking forward to receiving the letter.

“So, that’s where I am, just exactly what the Spirit tells me to do. Whatever happens after that is God’s will and I want you people who journey with Nice Radio and the family of Nice Radio and the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to pray and to continue to pay earnestly and sincerely that somehow God’s way will be the only way,” De Freitas further told listeners.

He also called on listener to the station, which has the slogan “2% radio; 98% love”, to pray “That God will change the hearts of each of us in a way that will bring some healing in the land.”

He said God had used the situation with the station “to show His greatness [and] that He is still in control of everything and can heal the land.”

De Freitas, who like Gonsalves, is a Catholic, said he belongs to a church that preaches social justice.

“And in that doctrine of the church it is necessary that we speak to the things that are wrong, without fear or favour. And in speaking, those words shouldn’t be meant to defame anyone. We suffer the consequences when those things happen. Because, on the other side, it is how the other side accepts what is necessary or an apology,” he further said.

De Freitas has repeatedly said that Gonsalves has dealt with Nice Radio, which is widely regarded as supportive of the opposition New Democratic Party, differently from other stations.

He had said that while other stations have broadcast defamatory things about Gonsalves, he has always asked them to apologise without asking to pay compensation.

However, Gonsalves asks Nice Radio to apologise and pay $250,000, De Freitas has said.

Gonsalves has also repeatedly said that while he will seek redress for defamatory comments by his political opponents, he has no interest in closing done Nice Radio.

  1. Douglas, don’t hold your breath, you know better than anyone that Gonsalves ia heartless.

My opinion is that he believes that by destroying you and your radio station, he is striking at all the citizens that vote NDP, and striking at the NDP party also.

I also believe that he is mentaly sick, is he?

If your radio is closed down and you give up, I will start a radio on line that is opereated outside SVG, that will be available in SVG and the whole world.

So GONSALVES you nasty little fat man, you will never destroy the ability of the news about what you are doing getting out to our people here, and in the Diaspora.

    God bless you Douglas.

  2. Dougie Defreitas seems to be suffering from amnesia.

He watched and listened to the NDP lunatics and their sympathizers demonized and defamed his cousin, the PRIME MINISTER of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, for over 12 years and did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about it.

In fact, he partake in that type of behavior towards his cousin on his programme called Breakfast With God (more like Breakfast With Satan), so it is quite amazing and amusing to see him now begging Dr. Gonsalves not to pursue any more lawsuits against his station.

If Dougie is genuinely serious about wanting Dr. Gonsalves to stop the pursue of redress for what the NDP sycophants tried to do to his GOOD NAME and REPUTATION, he needs to clean up his OWN ACT and the mess that takes place on his radio station on a daily before that option is even contemplated by his cousin..

I am urging Dr. Gonsalves to continue his pursue his cases against those who DEFAMED HIM. If persons believe that they can say anything that comes out of their mouths without redress from their victims, then clearly they do not BELIEVE that they LIVE in a DEMOCRACY.

Freedom of Speech does not mean that you should make false and malicious comments about a person, with the intent to INJURE their GOOD NAME and REPUTATION, without redress.

Dougie, clean up your ACT and that of Nice radio before you come begging your cousin to stop his defamation cases against persons who injured him.

By the way, Dougie, if you are serious about changing the culture of Nice Radio, I want you to start broadcasting the meeting of Parliament without interruption. Your station has this reputation of only broadcasting the meeting of Parliament only when the NDP members are talking. You are playing partisan politics with your broadcast by cheating your listeners and the nation when you resort to that kind of underhand practice.

Dougie, we will be watching to see if you are SERIOUS about REFORMING the CULTURE and PRACTICE of NICE RADIO from this POINT FORWARD.

    • “more like Breakfast With Satan”.

Let me tell you something. The other people in Vincy could stand for it, but I am not going to stand by and watch a blaspheming and not say something. Passions might be high, but there is a God that is greater than all man, and all things. And looks down on us all. And you need to have some respect.

      • Dougie cannot be having “BREAKFAST with GOD” when one LISTENS to his DIATRIBE on that programme.

Moreover, is this the same station whose motto is 98% LOVE and 2% radio but which has about 5 or 6 DEFAMATION CASES against it because the NDP, their talk show host and SYMPATHIZERS/SUPPORTERS made slanderous comments meant to defame the good name and reputation of their victims?

  3. COOeeeeeeeee VINCYNEEDSASHOWERPOWA, the matter of saying something that is untrue, and saying something that is true but unproven is quite different. I have never heard Dougie say anything that is untrue.

Most if not all of what Dougie says is true, factual and proven to be such. Some of what he says is disliked because it brings the truth of situations and matters to the listening public.

Now for a family member who is behaving badly to take offence of Dougie’s utterances is a shame, but often the truth hurts.

Dougie has never been sued for what he has said, he has only been sued for what someone else has said.

In any case whose good name are you alluding to?
