Sen. Browne criticises NDP over S. Leeward HQ event

ULP South Leeward candidate in the 2010 general election, Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, Sen. David Browne (File photo).

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Sen. David Browne, who failed in his bid to retain South Leeward for the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP) in 2010, has criticised area representative Nigel “Nature” Stevenson for launching his office last Saturday, when the constituency hosted its beauty pageant.

Browne on Monday also said that Stephenson — of the New Democratic Party (NDP) — failed in his address at the event at Campden Park to tell constituents what are his plans and programmes for the district.

He further responded to comments by former area representative, Jeremiah Scott, also of the NDP, about a “subtle evil” in the constituency.

“The NDP … opened their office in South Leeward finally and I respected the move but I think the timing was inappropriate. I think the timing was a little disrespectful seeing it was a carnival planned event,” Browne said on radio in reference to the beauty pageant.

Browne, whose business sponsored one of the contestants, said that he listened to the speeches by Stephenson, Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace and NDP chair Linton Lewis at the opening of the NDP’s South Leeward office.

“And there are some things I feel bad about,” he said, as he rebutted NDP claims that carnival organisers in South Leeward moved the beauty pageants to Saturday in an effort to affect attendance at the public meeting held to mark the opening of the office.

Browne said the pageant was being planned since January and said he did not know if Eustace was “talking from facts or what he received from someone.

“But the information that he was giving the general public was totally distorted and wrong,” said Browne, who added that his own party decided that is South Leeward conference will be held after carnival in the area.

“That is something that is clear; it is established. We must not find ourselves get in the part of any carnival events as a political party,” said Browne, who is Deputy-Speaker of the House of Assembly.

He further said that Scott is upset because of the progress that the ULP is making in Campden Park.

Scott, in his address, noted that before he was voted out of office in 2001, the ULP received 120 votes in Campden Park but that figure has since risen to 400.

Campden Park will never get anything from the ULP government. You know why? Ralph has sworn that he will teach you all a lesson in here. And he means it,” Scott said in reference to Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves.

He further said that roads in the community were in disrepair, the roof of the community centre was not repaired six years after it collapsed and unemployed youth were turning to cultivation of marijuana — an illegal activity.

“Remember that in Nature you have somebody who will take and articulate your problem. He has done it already. He ain’t go to power yet but give him that power and you will see the difference,” he said of his protégé, who was elected in 2010.

But Browne said a potential area representative “must have an agenda”, adding, “… I am not seeing that from the representative up to now.

“… I listened to his speech Saturday night and I ain’t hear one plan for the constituency up to now,” Browne further said of Stephenson, who defeated him 2010 when he replaced former area representative Dr. Douglas Slater as the ULP’s candidate.

“He said he is opening his office and he is going to do things for people. That’s it. There is no programme, there is no process of getting things done,” Browne further said.

Member of Parliament for South Leeward, opposition legislator Nigel Stephenson.

“He (Stephenson) said that the ULP parliamentarians are living life large. And I say it again, I am a senator, I make a senator’s salary. I get a stipend as the Deputy Speaker of EC$240 but I am also a hard working persons,” Browne said.

He said that while Stephenson makes twice as much money, the elected official does very little in the constituency.

“And then they (NDP) go on a mic and say they living large. I don’t know who he getting at but I want to believe is the 15 (ULP) candidates. … But I had it before politics and I will continue to have it because God will always bless me and I will always work hard,” Browne further stated.

He said that “the writing is on the wall” that he will replace Stephenson as the South Leeward representative after the next general election, constitutionally due in 2015.

“I feel like a king in Campden Park, honestly. I listen to the way they (NDP) speak and the way they put forward things and it clearly saying ‘Look, we know David is gonna win this thing. If he had a little more time (in 2010), he would have captured this entire thing. Oh my God, let’s do something to get rid of him. Let’s do something to get rid of Labour because he is definitely going to win this thing and it’s like a runaway train…’

“But that is what Labour is about,” Browne said.

“People are realising what is happening. You have two persons on the ground, one is working extremely hard, one is not working at all. One is receiving pay and open [an office] 16, 17 months later and collecting – what he do with the EC$1,500 for the past months? I don’t get pay for an office but I have one since election,” Browne further said.

He said that “a lot of projects” were done in South Leeward that did not need Cabinet approval and which were not financed by the Treasury.

“And when you (Scott) go about making those statements, you want people to belief as if … they (ULP) are getting things done because they are in government and that’s why we (NDP) can’t get anything done.

“… the former representative [is] a brilliant man, and [ULP General-Secretary, Sen.] Julian [Francis] did say that … he was the best representative that South Leeward ever had. But David Browne will change that in a period of time. …

“… The people need representation; the people need someone who is going to do the work for them and work very hard on their development.”

Browne said that during the 17 years of the NDP administration, all the scholarships in Campden Park “went into one household”.

“Now, I have about four or five persons from my Youth Arm going off to study all over the world. And outside of my Youth Arm, there are NDP-supporting children who are going off to Venezuela soon and Cuba soon. So, we have changed things around in South Leeward,” he said.

“I heard him (Scott) hinting a little that there is a subtle evil that is developing and … I wish he could come clear on this because if you are political, you are political. I wonder if he is saying, hear what happened, David Browne, a nice, wonderful young man but he is the subtle evil that exist in South Leeward so you must get rid of that subtle evil …” Browne said.

  1. Sen. Browne the Hon. Minister mention that in the coming months programs will be running, we need to stop this child politics we practice in this country. I will want to think if ULP was having an political event and there was an event where ULP have no part in, NDP will ah say the same thing, why can’t we in this country live as we from SVG, let me say we nether NDP, ULP, Green party or any P party, we are Vincention, for the love of this country let work together, the young people they are looking on and they are hearing and seeing what is going on.

If only I have my way I will of band all political meetings, all Radio hosts, cause these things if they don’t use in a positive way this country is not being help.

I remember while the campaign was going on. 2010, Mr. Sen. You have mention a lot of churches and the bring of them to work together, u can still work your plan, we have a country to build and seriously it’s not being they way big men get on.

Am fed up every day we pull down this and we pul down that person, can’t we for once see something and leave it, if the community does not vex with what happen leave it alone, this is s free country, and once we not breaking the LAW of the land we kool, I know of churches in one area will have an event and other churches in the same area have event, it does not bother any one we are human people will talk, am saying channel your focus where it really need.

  4. Browne you sound so petty and stupid. Why dont you go and pray for all the wicked things that is happening in this country under your Administration?

  5. This is stupid, these people are already in government, why do they care so much about the opposition. The opposition’s job is to keep the government on track and the government job is to keep the country on track. But we have a government that killed the country and is involved in commess everyday.Big … man, talking commess everyday, when they are the ones in government. Tell me please, how is talking commess about the opposition going to help our country?? they are not the ones in power you all are. Stop with this childish behavior and do the job you were elected to do, you’re making our country look bad.

  6. Nigel ‘Nature’ Stephenson, frankly, is a classic example of what is wrong with our society. He is an individual who should not be anywhere inside the corridors of Parliament representing a constituency as its ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE.

NATURE, frankly, is an EMBARASSMENT. His many gaffs in parliament, sorry debating skills and poor REPRESENTATION of his CONSTITUENCY are examples that have led me to conclude that South Leeward made a MAJOR MISTAKE when they voted for him to represent them in the House of Parliament.

I have no doubt that this MAJOR MISTAKE will not REPEAT itself when new elections are constitutionally due in 2015, because David Browne has DEMONSTRATED, although he is not the elected representative of South Leeward, that he is HEAD and SHOULDERS a BETTER CARETAKER of that constituency than Nigel Stephenson.

How can anyone EXPLAIN the ARDACITY of Nigel Stephenson, who is the Shadow Minister of Community Development and Youth, could open his constituency office on the very day than the South Leeward constituency was having their annual Beauty Pageant?

In other words, as Minister of Community Affairs and YOUTH, Nigel Stephenson did not attend his constituency’s annual carnival event, because he along with the support of his party decides to open his constituency office on that same day.

Is Nigel Stephenson SERIOUS!!!! Is the NDP forreal!!! Why do these people always play CHEAP POLITICS with everything?

Again, how can you PROCLAIM to be the REPRESENTATIVE of SOUTH LEEWARD and not ATTEND the MAJOR CARNIVAL EVENT of that constituency? What made it worse; he decides to OPEN his constituency office, some two years later, on that VERY DAY.

Why did he pick that day knowing that the carnival event was going to be held on the same day?

This is the party that bloggers like Peter, Joe, STEVEN_HUGGINS, SAADISS and others want to GOVERN this BLESSED NATION called St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

If this is the kind of behavior or decisions that they make when in OPPOSITION, can you IMAGINE what it will be like if they were in OFFICE.

Frankly, Nigel Stephenson should not manage a mauby shop much less elected to REPRESENT a CONSTITUENCY in the HOUSE of PARLIAMENT.

Again, Nigel Stephenson has been an EMBARRASSMENT every SINGLE TIME he has opened his MOUTH in the HOUSE of PARLIAMENT. I remember FEELING EMBARRASSED for the PEOPLE of SOUTH LEEWARD whenever he gets up to speak in the House of Parliament on their behalf.

In the case of David Browne, here is a young man who has shown much promise since becoming senator. He has been developing himself academically. He will soon get his MASTER’S DEGREE. He is the leader and visionary behind the South Leeward YOUTH AWARDS. The SOUTH LEEWARD YOUTH ARM is one of the MOST PRODUCTIVE and VISIONARY in all of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, thanks to the leadership of David Browne.

Moreover, David Browne has shown such great PROMISE as a POLITICIAN that he will make Daniel Cummings eat those INFAMOUS WORDS of his, when he said that ULP was SCRAPING the BOTTOM of the BARREL when it selected David Browne to be its candidate in the South Leeward constituency during the general elections of 2010.

I have no DOUBT that he will be the REPRESENTATIVE of SOUTH LEEWARD after the next general election in 2015.

By the way, Joe, some of the GREATEST PEOPLE ever RECORDED in HISTORY were around DAVID’S HEIGHT…put that in your PIPE and SMOKE it.

  9. How low can you go???. The national football team, Vincy heat, THE NATIONAL TEAM, was playing a game at Arnos Vale and the governing party responsible for sports, the ULP, held a political rally at Sion Hill playing field that same afternoon to take people away from supporting their national team.

    • DWELLS, David Browne was a NEW COMER to POLITICS. Nationally, no one knew who he was. There were many people in the SOUTH LEEWARD constituency who did not know who he was.

However, with little time to know the people of South Leeward, he made a POSITIVE IMPACT, but not enough to defeat Nigel, who was the clear favorite in that race.

Nevertheless, now that SOUTH LEEWARD has seen what they have in NIGEL STEPHENSON (he is LAZY and an EMBARRASSMENT in PARLIAMENT) and now that they have seen the GOOD WORKS David Browne has been doing throughout that CONSTITUENCY, even though he is not the REPRESENTATIVE, I have ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT that he will be the VICTOR come next general election in 2015.

  11. Joe, the word is audacity. Clearly, it was a typo. I am not going into details as to why it was made, because it is not needed.

That said; Edwin Snagg is qualified for the job that he holds. In addition, we know he will not UNDERMINE the ADMINISTRATION, as some CIVIL SERVANTS have done in the past.

Even James Mitchell has made mention of this practice by some civil servants during the campaign leading up to the general elections of 2010.

Julian is the GENERAL SECRETARY of the ULP. He was at the FOREFRONT of the STRATEGY to DEFEAT the NDP who had DEEP POCKET FOREIGN and LOCAL FINANCIERS and their campaign was MANAGED by WHITE FOREIGNERS, who are ADMIRERS of ADOLT HITLER, under the firm SCL.

He most definitely is deserving of a position in the government, because without him, the ULP would have been the OPPOSITION in PARLIAMENT.

That said; a GOVERNMENT cannot FUNCTION PROPERLY when there are PERSONS playing POLITICS with their JOB aka UNDERMINING the GOVERNMENT.

This is why I RESPECT LOUISE MITCHELL-JOSEPH, the daughter of the FOUNDER of the NDP, James Mitchell.

PRIME MINISTER Dr. Gonsalves hired her as the Offshore Finance Inspector despite the fact her father is the FOUNDER of the NDP and was still the DEFACTOR LEADER of that party. Now she is the CHAIRMAN of the SVG National Trust under this ULP GOVERNMENT.

Dr. Gonsalves has CONFIDENCE in her. He knows she is COMPETENT and PROFESSIONAL individual who is going to do the JOB to the BEST of her ABILITIES.

In other words, he knows that she is not going to PLAY POLITICS with her job (see Anesia Baptiste), thus he does not have to worry about she undermining his government.

When public workers who supporter the NDP gain that kind of PROFESSIONALISM and MATURITY, then this will only bodes well for the country, irrespective of which party is governing the country.

  12. De facto leader, Vincy Powa.

Can you tell us what they, the two red men, discussed on the beach in Grenada, in the ‘TALKS’ to END the ROAD BLOCK REVOLUTION ? Were there any PROMISES, or SECRET DEALS . . . ? Just asking . . .

BY THE WAY the COPYCAT comrade also PAID mitchy, I think via his daughter, SOME FOLLOW-UP, ADDITIONAL SUMS IN PAYMENT connected to certain PRIVATE LANDS sold at South Side, or specifically ISLE LE QUARTE. My cousin, Martha MITCHELL is said to have once owned that islet. I believe that she gave it to “Son”, some years ago.

You are attempting to explore a wedge between current NDP and founding member, James Mitchell. You are ignorantly overlooking the most critically decisive factor, here. YET, if Mitchell did such a politically shocking job on ST. VINCENT LABOUR PARTY in 1972, then I would not be amazed if he did a similar political job on the present day NDP.

Do you notice how them old, spent, boxers always try to come back, and futiley attempt to recapture the old-time flame of FAME, MONEY, AND APPLAUSE ?!

  13. Occam’s Razor says the simplest answer is usually the correct one.Multiple Choice Vincypowa:
SVG is in bad shape because :

    a) Ralph Gonsalves is incompetent

b.)All the public servants have conspired against the ulp, knowing the vindictiveness of the party, and knowing that the ulp puts party hacks in positions of power in the public service so it’s their own party they’re sabotaging

Vincypowa the way your pm is blaming people for anything bad that happens and never taking blame,it wont surprise me if in some country women are accused of raping themselves

    Posted by Joe | June 13, 2012, 17:39
    • So vincypowa do you believe that the comrade is right and every member of the public service is wrong? The most incompetent public servant of all is the one on top the prime civil servant, yet he runs his mouth more than any other civil servant….Does he get paid from taxes vincypowa? Then He’s a civil servant,he just doesn’t act like it because he knows you can only fire him at 5 year intervals…so until then it’s incompetence in the highest

  15. This is sickening…… in almost every comment on this article there are personal insults directed to the writers or the individuals who stepped up to be a servant of his community in both parties. None of you tried to run for this office so why be so critical of people who felt a calling to serve their country.
Yes discuss and even critize their political actions but save the personal attacks for a time when you are ready to confront them directly otherwise it shows personal cowardice.
Differences of opinions are great to have and should not be listed as “facts” and in the end of it all remember we are Vincentians with one goal of what is best for our nation locally, regionally and more over Internationally.
On personal note all political parties in SVG need an infusion of young blood which will issue in new ideas and a new era of good politics.

  17. JOE, ever heard of a GLOBAL ECONOMIC DOWNTURN that has BROUGHT FIRST WORLD NATIONS to their KNEES?

According to Eustace, the SVG WORKFORCE is too BIG. Meaning, if he was the PM, there would have been HUGE LAYOFFS during this GLOBAL ECONOMIC DOWNTURN. He would have listened to the IMF and GRAVE ASTERITY MEASURES would have been taken by Eustace.

We already know how he GETS SCARED when the IMF and AMERICA speaks.

Moreover, NO EDUCATION REVOLUTION, NO INCREASES IN POOR RELIEF, NO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PROJECT, NO NATIONAL LIBRARY, NO NEW SCHOOLS, NO NO INCOME, NO LOW INCOME or NO MIDDLE INCOME HOUSING PROJECT, NO BUCCAMENT BAY RESORT PROJECT, etc, all because of Eustace BALANCING the BOOKS no MATTER the COST.

This NATION would have been CRIPPLED under the LEADERSHIP of Eustace and the NDP during this GLOBAL ECONOMIC DOWNTURN.

    Posted by VINCYPOWA | June 14, 2012, 20:54
    • SVG was on its knees long before the global downturn, svg already gained a reputation as a country that “bows” thanks to prime minister beggy beggy. In his time as pm James Mtchell was able to create a bubble using bananas while that bubble lasted SVG had the fastest rising middle class in the region..Ralph Gonsalves couldn’t create anything,he can’t create a bubble if you made him eat beans all day while lying in a bubble bath…Seriously 10 years in office and not 1 money making idea?many money taking ideas(begging, vat etc) but not 1 money making idea. He’s a sad excuse for a pm…winning an election isn’t everything, the ulp knows hw to win an election but they don’t know how to govern

      Posted by Joe | June 15, 2012, 10:38
      • JOE, the BANANA INDUSTRY was PRACTICALLY DEAD under the NDP. When the ULP took office in 2001, the Banana Growers Association had a deficit of over 30 MILLION DOLLARS.

Take for instance, in 1991, SVG was exporting 70,000 tons, by 1993, EXPORTS FELL SHARPLY to 40,000. This TREND continued under the then NDP government.

Again, banana would have died if the NDP was still in office. The NDP has admit as such, the DEMISE of the banana industry when they’re in office.

Joe, all you have to do is watch the amount of vehicles on the road as compared to when the NDP was in office to know that the middle class has risen since the ULP took office.

        Posted by VINCYPOWA | June 17, 2012, 13:04
    • Let me ask you this. Where is the money coming from to pay for all those great things. The government had only to do one thing right, and svg would have been in better shape, and that was to keep the banana industry going, and they couldn’t even do that.

What education revolution are you talking about?? I have yet to see one in SVG, believing sound bites and big speeches without thinking would make you nothing but a well listening fool.

You have to balance the books, money doesn’t come out of thin air, you are either going to pay for it now or pay for it later. For the first time in our history we are billions in debt. It is amazing that you people still talk party politics at a time like this. THE GOVERNMENT, BANKRUPT US WITH HELP FROM IDIOTS LIKE YOU THAT SHOUT AND CHEER THEM ON.

      Posted by blane | June 15, 2012, 12:49
      • Blane, how much debt was the banana industry in when the ULP took over from the backward NDP in 2001?

It is the ULP that saved the banana industry. If the NDP was still in government, the BANANA INDUSTRY would have died, just like all the other agricultural sectors practically died under the NDP.

Blane, I am talking about the EDUCATION REVOLUTION that has been taking place in SVG for over a decade. If you have yet to see one then it shows that you’re LIVING on another PLANET.

Blane, why don’t you tell us the vast DEVELOPMENT that has taken place in SVG under the then NDP government by balancing the books.

  18. VINCYPOWA, we could of had most of those projects because they were funded by someone else and outside organisations, these and many other projects would have been offered to us whoever was in power. None were a GONSALVES project, only the bull$£it and lies can be attributed to GONSALVES and his supporters like you VINCYPOWA..
The exception is the airport which should have been paid for by others, that turned out to be a massive lie and has bankrupted the country.

VINCYPOWA, you are a liar and are guilty of deception.

There have been no NO-COST houses built by the government, about 40 houses were built free by the Mustique Company for people whos houses were destroyed in floods and tempest. The low cost houses could only be afforded by government workers where both husband and wife were working, many of them have been reposessed for nonpayment of mortgage.

All the crap that is fed to the people and those in the DIASPORA, lies piled on lies. Unfortunatly some of those in the DIASPORA can be fooled all of the time, whilst we here in SVG only some of the time.

VINCYPOWA, the great deciever, comment on this, tell us about this, what is your opinion?

In 2009, the IADC purchased, from its own resources, 25 pieces of heavy equipment costing EC $12 million, namely: 17 Articulated Trucks; 2 Motors Scrapers; 2 Bulldozers (1 – D8 and 1 – D9); one Caterpillar 345 Excavator; one Caterpillar 330 Excavator, with Hydraulic Hammer; one Wagon Drill; and one Kobelco Crane.

There is something seriously wrong with this cost [EC$12million]. Its about double what it should be.

For instance the Terex Articulated trucks are ex British Military and were sold in the UK by UK government appointed agents for 1 £35,000 buy several for £32,000 each, or buy over 10 for $28,000 each.

A fantastic buy with only 500 to 1000 hours usage, which makes them of almost new condition.

The trucks at the airport originated from this source, I know because I checked at the time they were purchased posing as another buyer.

Whichever of the UK government agents you chose to buy from the prices were the same and were set prices, I enquired by three agents.

The cost of these trucks should be less than EC$2million.

The other seven pieces of used equipment should not of cost more than EC$5million, and that’s on the high side.

    SOME QUESTION WE WANT ANSWERED

Did IADC buy this equipment off its own bat, if so who was responsible for arranging and orchestrating the deals?

Did an SVG government officer and department arrange and conduct the purchase of this equipment?

Was a Vincentian company or individual or firm involved in these transactions?

Was any overseas Vincentian individual or company involved in these transactions?

Was an SVG senator involved in these transactions?

Was payment made directly to the vending owners or agents or was the purchase made through third party dealers or agents?

I have official quotations in hand!
