CDC defends Ms SVG 2012 results

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Chair of the Carnival Development Corporation’s (CDC) Beauty Show’s Committee, Cheryl Rodriguez had defended the judging of the Miss SVG pageant held at Victoria Park last Saturday.

Miss Lime Carice Glasgow 23, of Glen, won the title ahead of seven other contestants, including Miss Mustique Co. Ltd., Terranza Franklyn of Golden Grove, who won all but one of the judged categories of the show.

The 20-year-old Franklyn took the Best Eveningwear, Best Swimwear, and Best Talent titles while Glasgow won Best Interview segment.

The interview segment counts for 30 points; swimwear, 25 points; evening gown, 25 points; and, talent, 20 points.

Persons have been questioning the results with some saying that Franklyn should have won because of the number of categories that she dominated.

But Rodriguez, in an interview with the state-owned National Broadcasting Corporation, defended the integrity of the judging.

She said that the scores are tabulated by auditors and not by judges and the winner is the contestants who get the highest number of points overall.

“Judges do not confer. They record their individual scores, and the sheets are passed on to the auditors. The auditors tabulate the scores and the girl with the highest points comes out the winner,” Rodriguez said.

She said the five judges on the panel are all Vincentians of “high integrity” and judges are not allowed to discuss with each other the number of points the give any of the contestants.

Glasgow, who has an Associate Degree in computer science from the University of the Virgin Islands, is a senior majoring in business administration with a concentration in finance, at the institution.

Her winnings Saturday night include an EC$80,000 university scholarship and EC$8000 in prize money. The 2009 Miss University of the Virgin Islands aspires to be an corporate lawyer.

  1. And a fine lawyer she will make too. Go placidly among the noise and haste child. And please don’t trade your humility for anything or anyone. Walk good!

  2. I guess we should take into consideration that of the 5 categories Terranza won in, only three were awarded points. With the interview segment carrying the most weight and Caprice snagging that, all it would have taken was for Caprice to be a close second in the other categories for her to win outright and she did.

Thanks to CDC for giving an explanation when in fact they didn’t have to.

  3. The LADY looks picturesquely REGAL. A little bit on the skinny side, but, then that’s because our beauty culture has lately been patterniizing the misguided Euro-American model and pageant standards. Caribbean and Black women, you can look good, yes, even with some good amount of flesh on you; don’t fall for the mostly Causasian myth in their present cultural slide. Some global studies quite recently determined that Black women have the very best proportions, naturally. Capitalise fully on your feminine assets, my Caribbean, and Black, sisteren.

Queen Carice GLASGOW looks marvelously beautiful and fabulous in all her royal spledour. My best wishes for her and all the great looking contestants. A note on contemporary cosmetics. They substantially African-derived.

I have seen some short sighted comments on the “European-ness” of modern cosmet procedures. Actually, the CONTRARY IS TRUE. Much, perhaps MOST, of European, North American, or generally Causasian, HAIRSTYLES and COSMETOLOGY originally derive from EGYPT in NORTH AFRICA, the land that produced the sensational PRINCESS/ QUEEN CLEOPATRA of worldwide historical fame.

  4. I don’t even know why people are debating the win, the young lady’s swimsuit fit her well, her talent piece was awesome and she looked great in her evening gown so I doubt the first runner up beat her significantly in those categories. On the other hand, they were miles apart in the interview, which Ms. Glasgow won, so again, why the debate? In the past there were winners who did not capture a single category, by now people should realise that the crowd favourite does not always win but as the saying goes “empty barrels make the most noise”.

  5. I think the CDC should publish the overall scores for the Ladies. Miss Glasgow did win the interview by far, let’s say she go the full 30 points. Ms Franklin winning all the other categories outright in My opinion. I was not at the show but watch it on pay per view for $10.00. I cannot see how the scores were so high as to put Miss Glasgow as #1, when the differnce in the rating is an average of 5 points.
Please publish the points and put this thing to rest

    • It’s a simple explanation, Carice was a consistent contestant , she did well in all categories which probably placed her second in every category that Terranza won. By winning the interview which carries the most point, of course she is going to be ahead of Terranza if she was second behind her in the other categories. Terranza was distracted by the crowd response, especially in her interview. Had she answer correctly with confidence and focus, she would have taken the Miss SVG title.

  6. And they wonder why svg can’t make it to miss

Continue with your ignorance…it would be my pleasure to keep “enlightening” you.

  7. Guess the winner does not look Caucasian enough for some people, so the cannot accept the winner. If it was the other way around with the same scores, people would have shouted CHEAT just the same. Best of luck to the winner!

  8. I think its a normal human reaction for folks, like myself, to be bellyaching over the results, on the basis that Terranza won in the majority of categories.

Now I accept the argument to an extent that Carice was consistent throughout her performance, I didn’t see the show, so could only rely on the opinions of some folks here and elsewhere…but it would have been far more enlightening had Ms Rodriquez given A BREAKDOWN OF THE POINTS AWARDED TO THE CONTESTANTS….If you are going to come to the media and defend the judges integrity, how about doing so with some substance. The explanation that it were the auditors who tabulate the scores as a defense for the Judges, is specious reasoning of the highest order…is it not the judge who award the points in the first place? The Auditors could ONLY TABULATE WHAT THEY ARE GIVEN BY THE JUDGES…right? So unless you are telling us that the AUDITORS HAVE THE POWER TO “CHANGE” THE SCORES GIVEN TO THEM…Ms Rodriquez needs to come again!

Look, the results are not going to change…and I can live with that; but like I said before, it would have been nice if the respective scores in each category are made public for the sake of transparency. However, what is done is done…and it is my earnest hope that Carice have a fantistic reign and represent SVG with class. ALL THE BEST FOR MS CARIVAL. OF COURSE I AM 100% BEHIND CARICE TO WIN MS CARIVAL.

  9. I think i it very unfair for someone who already has a university education to part take in the miss svg show .Miss svg show should be a pageant in which young ladies who cannot afford for a university education to portray themselves and wow the judges .Carice just stole someone’s opportunity.

    • Unfair comment. She did not make herself the winner. The CDC does not have not being at university as a criteria for entering the show either. I wanted Terranza to win but is is possible that although she won in most categories she did not win overall. You dont have to be a rocket scientist to reason that. Congrats Carice on obtaining the scholarship although I would prefer to see no Miss SVG pageant in my blessed land.

  10. This is mathematics. It is quite possible for one participants to win three out of the four categories and still do not have the winning score. For example, take the following average scores:
Catogories: Interview Talent swimwear Dress Total

    Contestant 1 28 15 20 22 85

    Contestant 2 18 20 23 23 84

Now you can come up with any combination of average scores with one contestant winning three catogories and still loosing to one contestant that only won one catogory. It is mathematics.

If the producers want to be tranparent just publish the results.. What is the big deal. It is not magic.
    Common sense !

  15. Jason she can wear a bikini at miss universe unlike certain former miss SVG(who was the only contestant not thin enough to wear a bikini),she also passed her eams at university unlike another former miss svg,the only problem I have with her winning is that she is already at a university,it would have been nice to send someone new off….plus it’s miss SVG where everything is transparent, not Miss Unity which probably has a secret prize l.o.l
