NDP chair Linton Lewis down for Senate position

NDP chair Dr. Linton Lewis has been nominated as an opposition senator (file photo).

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Chair of the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) Dr. Linton Lewis has been nominated for appointment in the Senate.

Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace made the announcement on radio Tuesday.

Eustace used the same medium to make the announcement as when he told the nation last month that he had fired then senator, Anesia Baptiste.

Lewis’ appointment will be formalised when Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantyne issues the requisite proclamations, in keeping with the Constitution.

It is expected that Lewis will take up the vacant Senate seat by the time Parliament meets on Thursday.

Lewis, a lawyer and accountant, has failed to win in the St. George constituencies three times, including against Health Minister Clayton Burgin in East St. George in 2005, and 2010.

Eustace’s announcement ends weeks of speculations about who would have replaced Baptiste.

Baptiste’s senatorial appointment was revoked after she said in an 11-page letter to Eustace last month that she would not obey an NDP policy prohibiting its candidates and potential candidates for national elections from making adverse comments about religion.

Baptiste was slated to represent the NDP in West St. George in the next general election, constitutionally due in 2015.

Lewis had in 2011 complained about Eustace not having consulted him before appointing Baptiste and Vynnette Frederick as the opposition senators after the 2010 vote, in which the NDP increase its parliamentary take from three to seven seats.

But he suggested in his weekly radio appearance on April 26 that he would accept the Senate seat if it was offered to him.

He stopped mid-sentence while responding to a caller’s comments that if appointed senator he would be second choice to Baptiste.

But he said that as a cricketer, he knows that sometimes the best of balls outs a batsman while the worst “can be dispatched to the boundary”.

Lewis successfully fended off an attempt by West Kingstown representative, Daniel Cummings, and Baptiste to wrestle the chair of the party from him during internal elections at the NDP’s convention last November.

  1. Not a fair comment to say Dr. Lewis lost three times in the St. Georges Constituencies, he lost twice in East St. George and once in West St. George, but your bunching them together gives the wrong impression.

  2. Let us wish Dr Lewis well as he serves the nation in this new role.

P.S. – I disagree with the previous commentator. While he/she provided further information, saying that Dr Lewis lost thrice in the St George’s consistuencies is a true and fair comment.

  3. It doesn’t GIVE the WRONG IMPRESSION.

Kenton ACCURATELY stated that he “failed to win in the St. George constituencies three times.”…TWICE in ST. GEORGES and ONCE in WEST ST. GEORGES.

In other words, he is a THREE TIME LOSER….THREE STRIKES U R OUT.

A THREE TIME LOSER is now a SENATOR, as an AFTER THOUGHT, because he was IGNORED by the same LEADER of his PARTY once to become SENATOR, even though he was the CHAIRMAN and had more CREDENTIALS than the two other INDIVIDUALS, ANESIA BAPTISTE and VYNETTE FREDERICK, SELECTED.

    LOSER PARTY=NDP.

  5. Vexalways, whats wrong by saying he lost 3 times in the St. Georges Constituencies? Would you prefer him to say he ran 3 times in the General Elections and lost? I wonder if he trying to beat Hulls’ record in Central Leeward (4 times)?

  6. Congratulations are in order for Dr. LINTON LEWIS on his announced appointment/ NOMINATION as SENATOR in the SVG unicameral parliament, the HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY – – – as a replacement to the dismissed SENATOR ANESIA BAPTISTE. The nomination of members to the nominal SVG SENATE, on the oppositon side of the isle, is SOLELY AT THE DISCRETION OF THE DULY APPOINTED LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION. It is to be hoped that all and sundry finally recognised this CONSTITUTIONAL FACT OF LIFE. Make the best of it, Linton.

  7. Wrong impression? Mm..the fact remains he was rejected by the electorate on 3 separate occasions. But that being said, I think it was a foregone conclusion that Dr Lewis would be selected as the new Senator; lets see how he conducts himself in the house of Parliament.

This should make for an interesting period for the internal politics of the NDP; as Dr Lewis status has now been further bolstered to challenge for the top “dawg” in the party.

Is Dr Lewis on track to be the NEW LEADER OF THE NDP?

    • Highly perceptive, SAADISS.
Do we then out-do T & T in having FOUR MAN RATs? I do hope that the multiplicity of super talent at the forefront of the NDP would redound to its benefit. These stalwarts would have to submerge their personal/individual ambitions for the greater good of their political party and the nation of SVG. Linton’s dual posts within the party does, indeed, nicely strengthen his hand for the future.
This current Eustace-led NDP is SVG’s only PARLIAMENTARY OPPOSITION PARTY standing between us and TOTAL LENINIST DICTATORSHIP in HAIROUNA.

  8. I expect that this appointment would lift the standard of debate in the house.

  9. @ vexalways lol….so West St. George and East St. George and not St. Goerges constituencies nonetheless?…..What is the wrong impression that is given?

  10. Lynton Lewis holds a Doctorate in Law, unlike Donkey Gonsalves the great pretender, who holds a PhD in something else other than law.

The last election Lewis saw any chance he had of winning eroded by ULP members, Mps and Ministers illegally putting out lies about his character.

This illegal election behavior by the government, only goes to reinforce my belief that they are a scum regime. Led by Marxist scum who also carried out election fraud on a massive scale by bribing citizens to vote for them, with money and goods. Also ULP supporters moved about and voted in constituencies where the didn’t live, and in some cases voted more than once.

ISN’T THAT THE BEHAVIOR OF SCUM?

  11. Congrats to Mr Lewis. He played great cricket her as well. The story does not loose any thing by that factual slip. Factually he lost 3 times at the polls is the essence of that line.

  13. I think this is one of the very best decisions that the leader of the opposition has made in a very long time. Good Job Mr. Eustace. I know that Dr. Lewis will make a very good contribution and will compliment the opposition team.
I look forward to hearing Dr. Lewis in Parliament.
    Congrats Doc.

  14. So what if he lost three times, take a long hard look at the Donkey Gonsalves yard boy Francis the Philistine. He promised constituents goats, sheep, cookers and ovens and all sorts of crap, he was still rejected even after bribing the electorate.

Lewis was not elected because of illegal acts and dirty tricks against him, all part of a ULP conspiracy. What a scum regime the Unity Liars Party is, led by a Marxist who is the Caribbeans leading liar..

  15. The NDP should try something more progressive when the hold the next meeting to select a leader. How about choosing a leader and a Deputy leader at the same time. If the leader screw-up the deputy takes over. It will also put some control on the leader who thinks he’s king of the hill. Arnhim should have consulted other members of the party (including Linton) before he selected the two women to the senate.
Let’s hope Linton would speak up when Arnhim or any other leader steps out of line. He didn’t when Kingsley was replaced by Vynette as a candidate in the last election. I don’t think this young lady is ready. I’d like to ask all the candidates (NDP and ULP) why they are running for election. If they try to use the old cliché, “I want to represent my constituency”, just follow-up with, “How, when, where and why”. I doubt you’d get an honest answer.
The same scenario mentioned above, about picking NDP leader and deputy leader, can be used for the ULP party. Ralph had a coronation when all other candidates ran for cover. With no viable replacement he became a dictator. However the last election shows his Achilles heel. He can’t push these candidates around like he did to the previous members. With one seat advantage he could not fire the previous minister of agriculture. This man was ripe for the lion’s den because killed banana and all other agricultural products. Now SVG is a basket case.

  16. @Peter, you need to find out facts before you talk. What false rumours were spread about Dr. Lewis?…Are you talking about the rumour that he got a girl at the then Carapan secondary school pregnant and she had to leave school was that a rumour??????????????…why dont you pick up your phone and ask him about this specific incident and hear what he says. When you would have talked to him please post his response here.

  17. PETER, what did the ULP put out about LINTON when he LOST, BADLY too, to MIKE BROWNE in West St. Georges?

What did the ULP put out when he went to EAST Georges and received a SOUND LICKING from Clayton Burgin?

The FACT of the MATTER is, LINTON, with all his ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS, is a POOR POLITICAL CANDIDATE. His PERSONALITY doesn’t RESONATE well with the ELECTORATE in St. GEORGES, and that is why they REJECTED HIM THREE TIMES.

He is a THREE TIME LOSER as a CANDIDATE of a MASS POLITICAL PARTY and he will be a LOSER again in 2015, thus JOINING the NDP CANDIDATE in CENTRAL LEEWARD, NORELL HULL, as a FOUR TIME LOSER.

Moreover, I GUARANTEE that he will be EXPOSED as the LIGHTWEIGHT that he TRULY is in the HOUSE of PARLIAMENT.

Nevertheless, CONGRATULATIONS to LINTON on being the AFTERTHOUGHT CHOICE of LEADERLESS Arnhim Eustace as the new SENATOR to REPLACE the MERCURIAL Anesia Baptiste.

The MERE FACT it took Mr. Eustace close to a MONTH to ANNOUNCE the REPLACEMENT for Anesia is all you need to know about what he TRULY THINKS of the CHAIRMAN of the NDP, LINTON.

  18. How much time did GUNZZIE lost while in opposition? The comments of the nincompoo Vincy POWA and the other Armin-hating -ULP-askes are so predictable it is a wastes of time trying to engage them. They are just too stupid to be involved in any meaningful and rationale discourse. It is more relevant to have a conversation with your pet dog.

  19. Vincy Powa, You and Peter are two commess men and sh… disturbers. Peter can do much better because he has often shown he’s capable of stating facts on several hot topics. If only he can stick to the topics and forget about Ralph (he’s on his way out). Your knowledge of current and past incidents is commendable. I find some of your articles very interesting and those I read. However when you follows Vincy Powa into the gutters, that’s where I put those articles. You don’t have to mention names, just facts and the readers will be happy, or will they? Vincentians seem to thrive on commess and that’s sad.
I am sure you gentlemen can do much better if you stick to facts and leave poor Ralph’s name out of the discussion. I know it will be difficult for Vincy Powa, because he tries too hard to defend Ralph. There are very few positive things one can say Ralph had done for St. Vincent and the Grenadines. If I have missed some please let me know. You can start with things that benefitted all SVG nationals and not just his supporters.

    Posted by pvpalmer | May 30, 2012, 13:33
  20. vincy powa every one can see that you have something personal against Dr Lewis, why don’t you tell us how many times the Pm lost before you alk about Dr lewis or even mike browne.

    • HAPPYVINCY, he had to be pitifully RESCUED by what he had contemptuously referred to as ” A COCO-NUT BAT” politician, who had also incidentally ‘cut his political back-side’, REPEATEDLY, before JOHNNY PETERS, a relative newcomer and non-ideologue, COMPOUNDED THE TOTAL POLITICAL HUMILIATION in 1989 – – – and CHARGED HIM WITH BEING BORN WITH A BOURGEISIE SILVER SPOON IN HE MOUTH, to booth.

      Pobre west indian copycat…

Even when they calculated then, that because he had so much more political mouth, that he SHOULD RUN FOR ONE OF THE KINGSTOWN SEATS, or, at least, NORTH WINDWARD – – – thus hopefully, strategically, giving them ANOTHER seat, in 1994, IN ADDITION TO THE SAFE FORMER BEACHE-SVLP SEAT OF NORTH CENTRAL WINDWARD – – – the POLITICAL COWARD refused to be path-breaking and adventurous, and latched on for live and death to the Beache NCW safe seat. HE JUST COULDN’T TAKE ANOTHER, A FOURTH, POLITICAL DEFEAT.

      NO BRAVE LEADER AT ALL.

Now minions and political acolytes, as seen here, can give these weak, trite, petty ‘rationalizations’, OR SPECIOUS EXCUSES, FOR HIM and re-paint the BADLY TARNISHED POLITICAL IMAGE as some sort of wannabe ‘winner.’

Repeat: he could never have won a seat on his own without CROSSING THE FLOOR TO HIS HATED POLITICAL ENEMIES IN THE ST.VINCENT LABOUR PARTY (SVLP). And being treated with absolute PITY by the “Coconut Bat” rival, whom he accused of being a technician who couldn’t even fix a common ‘fridge.’

Every day, he should THANK THE HATED ‘COCONUT BAT’ man. But, ah hearing now that it was really politically bought. Nah ask me. Ask PETER. Then, again, COUNTRY-MAN tells me that he was at that secret meeting, too.

      • STEVE_HUGGINS, feel free to tell us how come NO NDP CANDIDATE has NOT BEATEN Dr. Gonsalves since he won his SEAT. Moreover, I SUGGEST that you PAY ATTENTION to his NUMBERS INCREASING in EVERY ELECTION ,even when he was LOSING.

Now he has been reelected with MORE VOTES than any POLITICIAN of either PARTY in SVG.

It just goes to show you his POPULARITY and the CONFIDENCE that the people have in him as LEADER of this BLESSED NATION.

That said; Vincent Beache was a HIGH PROFILE CANDIDATE for the then SVGLP. Moreover, he had the MACHINERY BEHIND him. Dr. Gonsalves on the other hand was a THIRD PARTY candidate going up against the candidates of the TWO ESTABLISHED PARTIES in the country, the SVGLP and the NDP.

Then you had an ELECTORATE who SIMPLY wasn’t READY for a VISIONARY CANDIDATE the likes of Dr. Gonsalves. So yes, one can understand why he, a third party candidate, lost to the candidates of the two ESTABLISHED POLITICAL PARTIES.

LINTON on the other hand couldn’t beat Mike Browne in West St. Georges and he could not beat Clayton Burgin in East St. Georges.

Now if LINTON was a CANDIDATE of the GREEN PARTY, a third party, I would have understood the reason why he lost, for example, to Clayton Burgin, TWICE.

The FACT of the MATTER is, Linton is simply a POOR CANDIDATE, because he doesn’t CONNECT with the PEOPLE in St. Georges. In the case of Dr. Gonsalves, he has always been a MAN of the PEOPLE.

  21. Physically and intellectually more imposing than Gonsalves, the Dr of Criminal law vs the Dr of Constitution law… Linton’s meritocracy vs gonsalves ulpartyocracy

  22. Ralph doesn’t have a doctorate in any branch of Law. His upper degrees are in the “soft” science of political science, which he never studied at the first degree (three year) level.
