Fire at 5-star Buccament Bay Resort

A fire broke out at the Buccament Bay Resort on Monday.

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – This photo, sent to I-Witness News on Monday, shows employees at the 5-star Buccament Bay Resort in Buccament Bay, South Leeward, using buckets and garden hoses to put out a fire at the resort on Monday.

I-Witness News has so far failed in its attempts to contact the management of the resort about the cause of the fire. However, reports say that the fire might have been started by disgruntled employees for non-payment of wages.

Buccament Bay Resort is a member of Harlequin Hotels & Resorts and pitches itself as an “all inclusive luxury beach hotel” that is “the perfect holiday destination for all the family”. It offers a variety of activities to cater for all interests, including the Liverpool Football Club Soccer School, Pat Cash Tennis Academy, the Harlequin Performing Arts Academy and The Spa with treatments by ESPA.

  1. You must be joking. Using buckets and garden hoses?
How was this rated 5 star with no fire fighting system in place?
Putting that aside, it is really sad to see yet another spanner thrown in the works.
If workers are disgruntled, is there no union to lobby on their behalf?

  2. Jeez, the epitome of third world indeed. A top class luxury resort without proper fire control? Buckets and garden hoses? No mention of fire extinguishers or fire trucks. I hope at least sprinklers are installed. I also hope that those allegedly responsible for this fire are charged with the serious crime of arson.

  8. Bad fire service and no fire service is traditional in SVG, why are you all so surprised that there is no provision at Buccament?

The fire engine from Kingstown has been known to attend a fire without water in its tanks, hoses that won’t couple to the engine, hoses that leak and fire crew with no firefighting skills or breathing equipment, no uniforms etc.
They have never been able to stop fire before its destroyed building and contents.

Yet still the ULP have a share out of a US$1 million in cash, undeclared money, proper money comes through a bank not cash in an old crocus bag. Tell the people where it came from. That was enough to replenish all we needed at the fire brigade.

  9. This is bad publicity for this five star luxury resort. Seeing that SVG does not have a fire department/services, this is an opportune time for the owners to consider investing in their own fire truck, sprinkler system, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. I cant believe that these were not included in their planning. They have to thank their lucky stars that the buildings are detached from each other, or the results could have been devastating.

  10. Arson is probably a story invented by the ULP Marxist misinformation machine.
With regard to employees or ex-employees setting fire to a unit. I can tell you that there are dozens of plain clothed security at Buccament at all times, you cannot walk about there without being questioned.
There is no one qualified in SVG who could decide how a fire started or to determine arson. The arson thing was voiced the very next day before any inspection or enquiry took place.
The Buccament management always keep a core of people who always get paid. Those people are looked after and continually fear for their jobs, so they toe the line and keep their heads down. These people are terrified of losing their jobs and would never down tools or take any other industrial action. You must also understand that Vincentians are not very good at protest, unlike most other places, they will put up with all sorts of crap.
What would happen in any other country, Buccament would be prosecuted for failing to have adequate plans and facilities, or equipment to deal with this or any other fire.
We need to realize that these buildings are built very very close to each other. A fire fanned by strong winds could burn the whole place down in a very short time. Its unsafe without proper fire fighting equipment on site, in fact its downright criminal.

The failure to have adequate fire fighting equipment or procedure at the resort is a failure by the ULP government inspectorite of such.. This should of been part of their planning permission. But there you go, nothing at the resort has been built according to the planning permissions granted. The original plan called for the site to be raised by about five feet and piled. Instead it is built at sea level on concrete slabs which will float, just waiting for a storm sea surge to destroy the whole project with the loss of many lives. A new beach has been built on rock fill, one of the restaurants is built on fill. They have built into the sea on reclamed land, swimming pools etc. They have altered the flow of the Buccament river, causing flooding of properties in Buccament village.

They call Buccament a 5 star resort, no its not, who gave them such an award? Nothing like a five star resort, I have visited many over the years.

I hope the ULP people who have been free loading from the resort have stopped such behavior since I exposed what is taking place. I will let you know if it continues because I know exactly who the culprits are.

Did Harlequin build a large house for a leading ULP?

    • Remember, the “first woman” got an interior decoration contract at that same hotel worth some $4 million, essentially to put in drapes/curtains in the rooms.
The other issue: How is the 5-star status arrived at? I suspect that there must be some authority that grants such a status. Is it similar to how “international” status is granted to Vincentian entities? For example, “international airport” means something specific, according to the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) – essentially the provision of immigration, customs and quarantine facilities or services at the designated airport- but Vicentians are consistently advised that SVG never had an international airport, even though Vincentians and foreigners alike use the five airports in SVG to travel to and from other nations e.g. one can fly directly from Martinique to Mustique, Union Island or Canouan and go through immigration, customs and quarantine at each airport.

  12. Remember that all SVG unions are now controlled by the ULP, workers have no rights if they object to anything that affects the government. They are unprotected and sold out by their leaders.

Least we forget, the Teachers were given a contract by the government which turned out to be unconstutional and therefore unenforceable. That was read and signed amongst others Gonsalves. Gonsalves said that he knew at the time of signing the contract that the contract was unconstutional and therefore unenforceable. Yet he told the teachers at the time it was the best contract they had ever had.

  13. What has frustrated me about St Vincent is the many short cuts taken and piecemeal actions to solve problems. However,I am always shot as a bajan with the retort wunna bajans think wunna know everything, which to me is a sad response. Vincentians need to speak up. A good example was the mens bathroom at the airport, no tiles on the floor. Took it upon myself to write the authorities, only the PS in Tourism responded. Is the tiling now done in the mens bathroom at the ET Joshua International Airport a year after my letters?

  15. This is the curse of the great Kalinago people, whose ancestral remains were dug up and unceremoniously piled in a heap in a location just below the site of the Buccament Petroglyphs (ancient rock art). No respect for our valuable history and the remains of what was once the home of several migrations of indigenous people. That is merely one of the many attrocities in the name of ‘development’ at the hands of these modern day barbarians and the classless/ clueless Gonzee. You can take a man from the gutter but you can’t take the gutter from the man – no matter how pretty you dress him up..

  16. TOLD YOU SO, fire was not arson.

  17. Lest we should forget that farmers who owned land in Buccament were told to vacate their land – prime agricultural land – to make way for this development. They were told they would be paid EC$4.00 (US$1.49) per square foot. Farmers who had lease holdings didn’t have a leg to stand on because the Comrade was calling the shots.

Ordan Graham was arrested and charged with sedition because he had the gumption to inform the people while on a Friends of the Tobago Cays platform in Buccament, that if the Comrad did not withdraw his draconian leadership style, blood would run in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He was speaking in reference to the looming economic climate and the Governments failure to connect with what is important for the survival of the Vincentian people, and what would happen if people could not feed themselves and their families while still keep their dignity intact. Ordan was subjected to tremendous indignity by this Administration because he spoke the truth as he saw it.

Where are the Buccament fishers today, may I ask? Squeezed into one corner of Buccament it seems. How long is that to last? And is it the hope that with new investors in the fisheries resources in St. Vincent that they too will be begging employment from foreign masters such as the Buccament developers?

Where are the children of Buccament playing football these days? Are they allowed to play on the community playing field that is now controlled by the developers? Please tell us.

That development was allowed to break numerous Planning and Environmental laws because the Comrade wanted it so and he had the power to make it happen. He also had the support of masses of people in the diaspora as well as on the ground in St. Vincent because it was in the name of ‘development’. What kind of development is worth salt if it is taking away livelihoods from farmers and fishermen, taking their land and destroying the natural environment that feeds us?

  18. A liar in word, spoken and written, liar in deed thought and word. Guilty of deception, deception of the people through lies. Guilty of theft, theft of the truth.

The question is, is there evidence that a serial rapist is most likely a serial liar? Or a serial liar is most likely a serial rapist?

A pathological liar as someone who lies habitually.

The question is, is there evidence that a pathological liar is also a serial bully? Or a pathological bully is most likely a pathological liar?

Many sociopaths are also pathological liars and can have a tendency to commit acts of violence including such violent acts as rape. Most serial killers fit the personality trait of a sociopath.

What is the link between indecency and telling lies?

Is there any known link between being a serial, habitual or pathological liar and sex acts such as indecent acts with other men, soddomy and buggery, rape and pedophilia?

One of the key narratives of the rape culture is that claims of false accusations are extremely common, and rapists are excellent liars.

People in privileged positions, politicians, priests, church leaders, lawyers and teachers are more likly to be Perverts, Rapists, Thieves, Frauds, and Liars than the ordinary man.

Some say these are acts of power, but its probably something far worse than that, its pure evil and a direct link with the devil.

  19. Up until February I was employed as a contracts manager on Harlequin Developments Construction Site at Buccament Bay.
I was responsible for the building off and most importantly the development of the new villas and block two.
However when I was ordered to use Mr Andy Smith (procure indirect) foreign workers , all from Prague , instead of excellent qualified local brothers & sisters . When I question this practice I was told by Messrs Smith , Terry, Campion and Ghent that if I didn’t “toe the Company line” then I would be out.
Without hesitation I resigned . I do not want my professionalism and great work ethics ruined by such devious and underhanded business practices.
I was contacted by Simon Terry (Lawyer) and told I must leave st Vincent immediately and that if I mentioned anything about Harlequin or Buccament Bay, that I would be sued.
How dare this pompous and arrogant Man and Company deal with me like this. I suffered daily threats and accusations from Harlequin People, especially a Mr Shaun Ghent who actually told me “I will make you disappear Boy” how dare he . He is a nasty , racist ,rude and angry man who tries to intimidate because he is a big overweight bully.
Just a small point. These are my lands and Islands, as a Proud Bajan Man, don’t come here and try and throw your weight around.
We are a proud People West Indians and we know how to deal with imperialist racists . How dare he call me “boy”.
I continue to get threats of Legal action against me and also violent, intimidatory threats from the South African bully boy. Everywhere he now goes he has a heavily tattooed man and a big German shepherd dog with him, does that mean the bodyguard now needs a bodyguard.
I am happy to stand by all my words and actions.

  20. KEVIN, may I please apologise for your treatment on behalf of decent Vincentian people.

Expect nothing from our Marxist scum government, who allow this kind of behaviour to go on. In fact one or two of the ULP are on the take from the resort.

    Thank you for your expose.
