Clouds over volcano cause eruption scare

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) on Tuesday published this photo on its Facebook page as it attempted to reassure Vincentians that there was no increased activity at the La Soufriere volcano, which last erupted in 1979, displaying 20,000 people.

NEMO said in a statement that on Tuesday morning its office received several calls from concerned persons and media houses enquiring if the La Soufriere volcano was erupting.

Some callers indicated they had seen smoke coming from the volcano while others indicated that they were smelling sulphur, NEMO said.

It, however, said that monitoring staff in St. Vincent and Trinidad had not reported any increase activity at the 4,049-foot (1,234 m) volcano.

“NEMO … wishes to remind the country that we continue to be affected by a trough system which is producing dense clouds and fogs, thunder showers and lightning storms. It is possible that lightning flashes combined with low clouds and fog can give an illusion of smoke in the area of the volcano,” the statement said.

  2. When she does blow it will affect the airport at Argyle, no escape route from there. The new hospital at Georgetown will be a no-go. And the Gonsalves mansion at Goss will have a first class view of the event.

All built in a pretty stupid are ehh.

    • Peter ohh Peter. how stupid thou art?

    • Peter you have a valid point there.

    • Peter you seem to be more concerned about the Airport and the Hospital. What about the lives of those who live in close proximity to the Volcano? I experienced the 1979 eruption, and I hope the Volacano doesn’t BLOW. Dont let politics cloud your better judgement. There will always be a time for politics and to cuss out the PM.

  3. What ever happen with negotiations or striking, walking off the job in protest? All this serves to do is scare away potential investors from St. Vincent. Now if I was the owner of the resort I would be seriously thinking of preserving my life and having thoughts of shutting shop, selling out and getting to hell out of this country.

    • Hey Jack, Whats wrong wth protesting especialy if it is for a Just cause? Are you suggesting that workers should either put up or shut up? . Are you aware that a company called Peco closed shop in the eighties and went to Haiti
because it was much cheaper to do business there? What about the kids who will suffer because their parent cannot put bread on their table or buy a book for them to read?? What about this Jack??

      • @Real, I really do not know how this comment ended up under this particular article but it was made in reference to the alleged arson at Buccamont. Take the time and read again my opening statement “What ever happen with negotiations or striking, walking off the job in protest?” and tell me where is it I state that I had a problem with protesting? All I am saying is there are different ways to protest and to protest by arson does the country more harm than good.

I cannot even comprehend how someone can work for a company that owes them more than one salary payment, because if you do not pay me when it is due I am not going back to work the next week and the next week while you keep promising to pay me. In unity there is strength.

  5. FUDZ, why don’t you cluck off and write a book or something.

JACK SPARROW, Buccament owe contractors, suppliers and work people huge sums of money, going back months and perhaps years. Are you suggesting that they all keep quite and try and pay off their bank overdrafts somehow? Abandon what they are owed, is that what you are saying? With the Unity Party hierarchy, family and friends, banking millions of dollars of US$ cash and refusing to say where it came from, people are truly pissed off, and rightly so.

I read a few weeks ago that Buccament owe Patrick Ferrari [his own newspaper column] a substantial sum for over 12 months. Should he write that off?

I don’t understand why someone doesn’t simply serve a winding up order on them.

Stop ULP people from taking food from them, stop the freeloading, stop the graft.

REAL, if I was an invester, at this time I would stay well clear of SVG lest I lose my investment. With a Marxist government and all the corruption thats going on in government, ministries etc. SVG is a bad bet. Its only a matter of time before it implodes.

    • Peter, seems you and Real have the same problem with comprehension, I never stated that the workers should not protest, I have problems with the form of protest, namely arson. I am not into all the political mambo jumbo because I am not a Vincentian and even if I were it would all be about my countries image and the well being of my country. We see this same ‘chop up and kill’ mentality in domestic situations. What ever happen with striking to shut down the damn place, what ever happen to all the labour unions coming together to address this problem? If the guest are not fed and the rooms are not clean and the towels and linens not change etc, you would see how fast they find money to pay the staff. Think country first, arson will scare away much needed investors in your beautiful country.

  6. Gonsalves needs to go up to soufriere and talk to it,put galvanize in the crater, tell it that he will fire it’s entire family,or sue it, but if all else fails he should call all the ulp supporters, let them hold hands forming a chain around soufriere and own de volcano…”Comrade yo see dat de red lava mean soufriere does support labour” l.o.l

  7. Things so bad in SVG a lot of people gone to soufriere to plant and smoke ganja,it’s not sulfur it’s ganja, and the smoke is the beginning of fire pon babylon, and the babble-lonian King Gunzy

  9. Only a fool would build a hospital in a town that is closest to the volcano, you can be sure that at some time in the future hundreds will perish at that hospital. Seeing as it is going to be manned by Cubans we will at least not lose to many Vincentian hospital workers.

Remember workers died at Orange Hill by the effects of volcanic gas, something they could not see.

How will they possibly evacuate the hospital during a major eruption, won’t be by sea, no helicopter, no train service, just a new road which is already falling apart because its not being maintained. The airport won’t be open even if its finished, aircraft can’t fly in ash clouds, and the airport will get plenty of that.

Nice present Gonsalves specificaly gave his constituants.

Presents from Gonsalves are like ‘fools gold’, it looks good but its worthless.

Gonsalves tell your constituants where the US$1 million in cash came from, and why they got none of that.

    • peter you the real fool. The volcano erupting every week right. You are so stupid it’s unbelievable.

  10. ERIC WILLIAMS, most private people in Georgetown and those areas have a car or have neighbors who have cars. These people have lived in Georgetown and areas for years, they know when to run by past experience of the volcano.
Gonsalves has decided for political reasons to build a hospital in a possible crisis area. That’s like building a house in the Rabbica dry river bed.
Can you imagine trying to move a huge group of disabled and ill people from a hospital? From a hospital manned by Cubans, who will probably leg it at the first whiff of sulphur.
By the way the hospital is years behind schedule, funds are always a problem with this Marxist government.
The airport at Argyle is being built there because Gonsalves wanted it as close as possible to his constituents, remember the ULP motto for its members ‘OWN THE JOBS’.
The correct area for the airport was at Kitchen, not Argyle.
Even the flooding in Georgetown and associated areas have been caused by the government in partially redirecting the Rabbaca river flow though small linked streams and rivers, as a protection of the new Rabbica bridge. That action has cost the Georgetown people dearly.

JACK SPARROW, arson is probably a story invented by the ULP Marxist misinformation machine.
With regard to employees or ex-employees setting fire to a unit. I can tell you that there are dozens of plain clothed security at Buccament at all times, you cannot walk about there without being questioned.
There is no one qualified in SVG who could decide how a fire started, to determine arson, the arson thing was voiced the very next day before any inspection or enquiry took place.
The Buccament management always keep a core of people who always get paid. Those people are looked after and continually fear for their jobs, so they toe the line and keep their heads down. These people are terrified of losing their jobs and would never down tools or take any other industrial action. You must also understand that Vincentians are not very good at protest, unlike most other places, they will put up with all sorts of crap.
What would happen in any other country, Buccament would be prosecuted for failing to have adequate plans and facilities, or equipment to deal with this or any other fire.
We need to realize that these buildings are built very close to each other. A fire fanned by strong winds could burn the whole place down in a very short time. Its unsafe without proper fire fighting equipment on site, in fact its downright criminal.

They call Buccament a 5 star resort, no its not, who gave them such an award?

I hope the ULP people who have been free loading from the resort have stopped such behavior since I exposed what is taking place. I will let you know if it continues because I know exactly who the culprits are.

What should of been intalled at George town is industry, not hospitals. a couple of new clinics yes.

Prior to the re-election of Gonsalves I had two client European companies who are looking to invest in the Caribbean. I honestly could not recommend that they invest in SVG under this Marxist government, specially when you see what total disregard to investors Chavez .our ALBA partner has to the financial security of investors.
One client would of built an assembly plant for farm equipment, completed items to be distributed throughout the Caribbean. Importing all the parts for the assembly of this equipment.
Initially this was a 100 job project, lost to Georgetown and SVG.
This project was nothing to do with either NDP or ULP, just a genuine none political investment.

I felt it unpatriotic to support this Marxist regime. My decision so far has proved to be right. The country is in turmoil and on the brink of total collapse.

    • Peter u made a lot of valid points, most notably the one about no investigation being done, but can u kindly explain how the ULP marxist information machine would benefit by starting such a rumour or is this just an emotional mouthing with your brain being neutral? I seriously do not see the connection seeing how this is their ‘resort flag ship’ as it were. Mind you I am not fond of the Comrade or all the comrades, but I like to be fair and just and not emotional and taking a swipe for the sake of taking a swipe.

      Posted by Jack Sparrow | May 11, 2012, 09:05
  11. The latest is that a statement has been made by the Resort that arson is not the cause and nor is it suspected to be.

Why did the ULP leaders say that Glen Jackson death had been political assassinated before any police investigation had taken place.

Someone knows the answer to that.

The Marxist information machine works in mysterious ways.
