‘Alternative political party is needed’ – Anesia Baptiste

Former opposition senator, Anesia Baptiste at the New Democratic Party’s convention, July 2010.

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Former senator Anesia Baptiste believes that this country needs a political party in addition to the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP) and the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP).

“It is clear that an alternative political party is needed; one that has genuine respect for the religious liberty and freedom of expression of all of the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, whether they be majority or minority groups. And one that also stands for true economic development and social progress that brings SVG into a golden age,” she said in a press release Sunday night.

Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace last month revoked Baptiste’s senatorial appointment after she said she would not observe an NDP policy that the party’s candidates and potential candidates for general elections should not criticise other people’s religion.

“I, Anesia O. Baptiste, have come under attack in recent times by some whose aim is to smear my character before the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines with their propaganda. Many untruths are spoken and published about me, the Thusian Institute for Religious Liberty Inc. And the independent Thusia Seventh-day Adventist Church to which I belong,” she said in the skeletal statement.

“The fact that both major political parties — the Unity Labour Party (ULP) and the New Democratic Party (NDP) have engaged in such misrepresentations is evidence that they are both the same. I simply stood for Religious Liberty consistently. This is the consistent thread running through all my actions,” the statement continued.

Over the past six years, Baptiste has fallen out of favour with both the ULP and the NDP.

I-Witness News last week pressed her for an answer about whether she had at all considered forming a political party.

“My comments will be no comment at this time,” Baptiste said.

  1. “The independant Thusian Seventh-day Adventist Church…” It seems like Ms. Baptiste has a problem coorporating with any organized recognized group – The ULP, NDP as well as the Seventh-Day Adventist denomination to which she formerly belonged. I know many Adventists. They are a wonderful and religious people who have done much charitable work globally. Should Ms. Baptiste consider forming another political part in SVG she might as well do some very serious introspection because those who cannot follow don’t usually know how to lead and may very well become dictators. This is just my humble opinion.

  2. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I’VE BIN ENCOURAGING ALL THE TIME…ONE ADVICE TO ANESIA THOUGH, DROP THE “GOLDEN AGE” RHETORIC, IT CONJURES UP SUSPICIONS OF EXTREMISM [MASS MURDER, INQUISITIONS, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN ELITE WHICH WILL ‘GUIDE’ THE REVOLUTION(remember khadaffi was called the ‘GUIDE’ of the revolution in Libya and he never saw any need to step down because a Guide is needed until the journey is completed and Khadaffi did not see the journey as complete, Revolutionaries like Anesia, Khadaffi, Castro and Ralph and Jesus never see the journey as complete in their lifetimes)]…HIDE THAT UNTIL WE ARE ACCPTED BY THE MAJORITY OK? BLESS.

  6. DWELLS. given the history of the current wannabe DICTATOR in SVG, you may be right on target.

F.U.D.Z., I still find your posts on this issue to be quite entertaining. I still ask myself whether you are being humourously mischevious, or tantalizingly provocative — yet absolutely interesting.

Peter, I feel that her ideal thrust, from a religious perspective, would be to GET OUT OF PARTISAN POLITICAL PARTY POLITICS. This, to my humble thinking, ought to do ultimate good for her INSTITUTE, and to her personal religious growth and development. But, the choice and modus operandi is obviously hers. Just as all options are open to all SVG people.

But, if she feels that she must directly engage in the current political struggles, then, she might find it more productive to politically agitate from outside formal party membership. The presently controversial SENATOR ANESIA BAPTISPTE focus her considerable advocasion skills on specific issues or policies of great importance to herself and, or, her affiliated group.

OF COURSE, historically, many of our RELIGIONS HAVE BEEN ALIGNED OR ASSOCIATED WITH TEMPORAL POLITICAL PLAYERS. Yes, very many of our more acceptable churches, do have compendious records of involvement in secular politics. Even in SVG. There are historical records of at least two respectable churches in SVG causing riots, or virtual disturbances of the peace over who had the authority or not to convert the indentured servants. Much of our SVG social, economic, poltical and administrative structures were influenced by religious actors/groups in their original setting up. Note the dismissal of the Callinago/Garifuna religious traditions, except for the annual trek to Soufriere Volcano, and the historical closure of the Jewish Synagogue in Kingstown. The outlawing of the African religions of the enslaved, later freed, peoples were POLITICALLY DONE, THROUGH DECIDEDLY RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE.

There has been no SEPARATION OF RELIGION AND POLITICS IN SVG SINCE circa 1500 A.D.

There has been an at least defacto ESTABLISHED CHURCH in SVG for much of our colonial history, like it or not.

We are confusing or conflating SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, with SEPARTION OF RELIGION AND POLITICS.

I think that we are most of us agreeable to a SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE in SVG. We generally do not favour a politically “established church”, for the present and perhaps near future.

But, it is a glaring ignoring of history, ancient, medieval, or modern, to deny the all-too-frequent symbiotic, or collaborative, relationship [co-existence?] between secular, temporal, POLITICS, and official or unofficial RELIGION, or churches.

Indeed, the truth be frankly told, our politicians regularly, frequently, consistently utilize religion, religious contacts, and religious alliances, in order to gain/attain, or maintain, POLITICAL POWER.

What on earth do you think E. T. Joshua use to do when that great political leader went to BATHE at my ‘Shaker’ cousin in LOWMANS in every PRE-ELECTION SEASON for???

Why did the LENINIST Copycat, a rabid exponent of ATHEISTIC COMMUNISM, after his first BIG MARXIST-LENINIST DEFEAT in SVG, come with his last-minute political “CONFESSION” that he had just spoken to his ‘pastor’, and how his preacher had told him that he could go ahead and now make public that he had just recently baptized and so was now a good ‘christian’ ? He repeated that the last night before the polls, nearing the time-limit campaigniing deadline, in 1984, 1989 …

Whether SENATOR BAPTISTE forms, or co-founds, yet another POLITICAL PARTY, or not, the point remains that she is a citizen of SVG with full rights to do so or not.

If I were asked for my personal preference among the options, I would urge : GET OUT OF THE PARTISAN PARTY-POLITICS. Things are getting so bad in this 21st century, that, just now, soon, we will most of us be RUNNING FROM THE POLITICO-SOCIO-ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT OF SVG. So sad are our overwhelmingly challenging national state of affairs becoming.

arhwe geh de COPYCAT fuh ‘tank’ fuh dat, MAINLY.

If I were an atheist and atheistic ‘scientific-socialist’, ‘international’ socialist, MARXIST-LENINIST Communist, and I had infiltrated the MASS ORGANIZATIONS, AND MAIN [OPPOSITION] POLITICAL PARTY and so finally, duplicitously gained power in SVG, via deceptive insincere FLATTERIES —- then,— I WOULD ABANDON THE MENDICANT, back-ward RUSSIAN, FAILED soviet-style ATHEISTIC COMMUNIST —– and STAND UP FOR SVG, FOR ITS FREEDOM FROM COMMUNISM, FOR ITS SOVEREIGNTY AND NATIONAL INTEGRITY, AND FOR ITS first-past-the-post REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY — that, despite its warts, hiccups, and intermittent surprises, HAS WORKED SO WELL FOR US OVER-ALL.

IF you did otherwise, then posterity would adjudge you to be, objectively, STUPID, DUNCE, AND IGNORANT.

The Vincentian old folks lang time say ’bout you, in particular: SENSE MEK BEFO BOOK.

The choice is still before you. Unless you are already too enslaved to your foreign communist MAASAs.

    QUO VADIS, SVG?

The PRICE of FREEDOM is our Eternal VIGILANCE.

  7. Did DWELLS, perhaps inadvertently, give us the true origin of the COPYCAT comrade?

” … those who cannot follow, usually don’t know how to lead, and, may very well become DICTATORS … ”

    Ouch !

    THE COPYCAT DICTATOR.

  8. SVG truely needs an alternative political party both the ULP and the NDP has become so irrelevant to the needs of Vincentians our rights and freedom has been trampled upon our leaders are so immoral and quite misinformed. the real reason behind our independence was for us as a nation to work together to develop our country but over the 30 and add years since our independence what have we achieve so greatly nothing at all our founding fathers if they were to be alive would have been so tremendously disappointed with our so very little achievement, they fought for a reason our independence is not history it is victory over colonialism. hence the work that we have done over 30+ years should have been done in less than 2 terms by any of the so called major political parties in SVG. we have wasted to much time now awaiting the false promises from our leaders who are visionless and short sighted. we are fed up of going to the polls to vote for empty promises saint vincent needs a new direction we need a vision and not void promises, someone who can recognise the urgent need of the time and work together with all vincentians to achieve the one common good for all of us, we need an alternative who can ground all vincentians firmly by understanding their concerns and to find solutions to combat the growing problem of poverty in our nation. there is alot more to say but that will come in its rite time i am up for an alternative party there is lots of work to be done.

    • FERNANDO ..Do you really think that creating an alternative party, led by imperfect, power-hungry, selfserving humans is going to change our conditions much! We can do better as a people and as a country. But, it is not going to happen with people like Anestia Baptise et al. Miss Baptise’s “wreckless” and “childlike” response of the matter which led to her predicament, is not only disappointing but more importantly, it speaks volume to her character both as a professing Christian and an aspiring political leader!

Every now and then life throws us a nasty bouncer. What is important is not the ball but how we play that determine our competence as a good or bad players. More importantly, how we play reveals our true character.

Anestia has fail to demonstrate the kind of personal character and leadership qualities needed to place this country on a path of healing and national unity. What we have witnessed is the same old vengeful, arrogance, divisive politics we have all gotton accustom to. Maybe, we need a new political party. But, please don’t try to convince us that Anestia Baptise and her proposal is the answer. If you do, then I humbly submit that you are both naive and delusional.

Young sir or madam the position that I have taken on the notion that SVG needs an alternative political party was never instigating that Anesia Baptiste should form that alternative political party and by right be some form of saviour or eternal leader of the party. There is a deficit in every sector of the Vincentian society crime has been more rampant than ever, unemployment an even greater burden and poverty the greatest of them all, but yet I am naive and delusional. Can you demystify for me why is the Government not attacking the real problems affecting Vincentians it is simple they are bankrupt of ideas; in a spirit of truth my friend do you not think that more could have been achieved over the past 30+ years since our independence? You are vilifying Anesia Baptiste for her zeal to serve and leadership ability to affect the livelihood of Vincentians positively, you have already incarcerated her without a fair trial and you think that you are being civil and just by calling me naive and delusion in my agreement  to an alternative political party in SVG. The evidence and records are there to show that definitively both major political parties of SVG the ULP and the NDP are irrelevant to the needs of Vincentians and that we need a new direction. I state my case it was never in my humble opinion to try to convince any of you or anyone so please refrain from your preposterous and blatant attempts to categorise me. 10. With a population of 300 million they have been talking about an ALTERNATIVE PARTY IN THE US SINCE VINCYPOWA START SEEING HIS PERIOD…yet such callings have fallen on deaf ears…2 PARTIES HAVE DOMINATED THE US ELECTIONS FOR GENERATIONS…What is there in the political environment in our blessed 2×2 country that would accommodate an alternative party to the extent it could displaced any of the two present dominant parties? Let me give you a hint..ZILCH!

We have seen alternative political parties withered and eventually die from political starvation in SVG…the Green Party is barely hanging by a thread, thanks to the herculean effort of THE ONE AND ONLY CREDIBLE MEMBER …Ivan O’Neal. There is nothing, absolutely nothing in our political discourse and consciousness to remotely suggest, that there is room for an alternative political party in SVG. What we need in SVG is a revolution of the mind, too many of our people are sycophants of the respective political parties…having an alternative party with the same mindset does not change anything…we are just replacing like with like..we as a people have to change our outlook on how we see the political game…we are bystanders, with outstretched arms meekly taking anything that is put in our hands.

Our Politicians HAVE NO RESPECT FOR WE THE VOTERS…WHY? THEY TALK ALL MANNER OF BS ON THE ROSTRUM AND WE CLAP FOR IT…WE DEFEND THEIR INDEFENSIBLE ACTIONS…THEY SEXUALLY HARASS OUR WOMEN AND IN TURN THE WOMEN SAY THEY LIKE IT SO!…THEY LOST 3 ELECTIONS IN A ROW, YET THEY REFUSE TO THE HONORABLE THING AND RESIGN,WE SAY THAT’S OK HE GWINE WIN NEXT TIME…THEY ARE ACCUSED OF A DASTARDLY ACT OF RAPE, YET THEY SHAMELESSLY TELL US IT WAS JUST A REASSURING KISS, WE MARCH FOR THAT…THEY SOLD OUR NATIONAL BANK TO FOREIGNERS, WE SIT IDLY BY AND SWALLOW OUR NATIONAL PRIDE…THE COUNTRY IS GOING TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET YET THE OPPOSITION COULD ONLY PROVIDE A DELUGE OF SOPHISTRY AND DEMAGOGUERY, WE IN TURN,JUMP AND WAVE WITH OUR YELLOW FLAGS AND BAWL…WE NAAH TUN BACK!!!

WHAT IS AN ALTERNATIVE PARTY GOING TO DO FOR SVG? GOD ONLY KNOWS? YEP, WE ARE F<(#

  14. The Return of Albert by Marriott Edgar

You’ve ‘eard ‘ow young Albert Ramsbottom,
In the Zoo up at Blackpool one year,
With a stick and ‘orse’s ‘ead ‘andle,
Gave a lion a poke in the ear.

The name of the lion was Wallace,
    The poke in the ear made ‘im wild;
And before you could say ‘Bob’s your Uncle,’
‘E’d up and ‘e’d swallered the child.

‘E were sorry the moment ‘e’d done it,
With children ‘e’d always been chums,
And besides, ‘e’d no teeth in ‘is noodle,
    And ‘e couldn’t chew Albert on t’gums.

‘E could feel the lad moving inside ‘im,
As ‘e lay on ‘is bed of dried ferns,
And it might ‘ave been little lad’s birthday,
‘E wished ‘im such ‘appy returns.

But Albert kept kicking and fighting,
    Till Wallace arose feeling bad,
And felt it were time that ‘e started to stage
    A come-back for the lad.

So with ‘is ‘ead down in a corner,
On ‘is front paws ‘e started to walk,
And ‘e coughed and ‘e sneezed and ‘e gargled,
Till Albert shot out like a cork.

    Old Wallace felt better direc’ly,
And ‘is figure once more became lean,
But the only difference with Albert
Was ‘is face and ‘is ‘ands were quite clean.

    Meanwhile Mister and Missus Ramsbottom
    ‘Ad gone ‘ome to tea feeling blue;
Ma says ‘I feel down in the mouth like,’
Pa says “Aye! I bet Albert does too.’

Said Ma ‘It just goes for to show yer
That the future is never revealed,
If I thought we was going to lose ‘im
I’d ‘ave not ‘ad ‘is boots soled and ‘eeled.

‘Let’s look on the bright side,’ said Father
‘What can’t be ‘elped must be endured,
Every cloud ‘as a silvery lining,
And we did ‘ave young Albert insured.’

A knock at the door came that moment,
As Father these kind words did speak,
    ‘Twas the man from t’Prudential,
E’d called for their ‘tuppence per person per week.’

When Father saw who ‘ad been knocking,
‘E laughed and ‘e kept laughing so,
That the young man said ‘What’s there to laugh at?’
Pa said ‘You’ll laugh an’ all when you know.’

‘Excuse ‘im for laughing,’ said Mother,
‘But really things ‘appen so strange,
Our Albert’s been ate by a lion,
You’ve got to pay us for a change.’

Said the young feller from the Prudential,
‘Now, come come, let’s understand this,
You don’t mean to say that you’ve lost ‘im?’
Ma says ‘Oh, no! we know where ‘e is.’

When the young man ‘ad ‘eard all the details,
A bag from ‘is pocket he drew,
And he paid them with interest and bonus,
The sum of nine pounds four and two.

Pa ‘ad scarce got ‘is ‘and on the money,
When a face at the window they see,
And Mother says ‘Eeh! look, it’s Albert,’
And Father says ‘Aye, it would be.’

Young Albert came in all excited,
and started ‘is story to give,
And Pa says ‘I’ll never trust lions again,
Not as long as I live.’

The young feller from the Prudential
To pick up his money began,
And Father says ‘Eeh! just a moment,
Don’t be in a hurry, young man.’

Then giving young Albert a shilling,
He said ‘Pop off back to the Zoo.
‘Ere’s your stick with the ‘orse’s ‘ead ‘andle,
Go and see what the Tigers can do!’

  15. Whilst reading Machiavelli in the toilet tonight I came across the verse “The first opinion of a leader is the quality of the men who surround him” I immediatly thought of Gonsalves surrounded by all the scum, and realised how true those words were.

The interesting thing about him was that he was the founder of modern political science, and just to think Gonsalves thought that he was.

Machiavelli was a diplomat, civil servent, and auther. As a political scientist, Machiavelli emphasizes the occasional need for the methodical exercise of brute force, deceit, lies, and so on. He believed Violence may be necessary for the successful transfer of power and introduction of new legal institutions. Force may be used to eliminate political rivals, to coerce resistant populations, and to purge previous rulers who will inevitably attempt to regain their power.

Machiavelli stated that it would be best to be both loved and feared. But since the two rarely come together, anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in being loved.
In much of Machiavelli’s work, it seems that a ruler must adopt unsavory policies for the sake of the continuance of his regime.

His book ‘The Prince’ made the word “Machiavellian” a byword for deceit, despotism, and political manipulation.

Does all this sound familia, and this was over 500 years ago.

  18. FERNANDO and your point is ???? I still maintain my point. It is naive and delusional for anyone to conclude based on what has happen in the Baptise affarir that all of a sudden she is SVG’s Moses. You are too thin skin man. Relax for God’s sake.

  19. ROINUJ and FERNANDO, actually, SVG has frequently, ALMOST ALWAYS, had ALTERNATIVE PARTIES.
Currently, we have the very active, but still small in numerical membership and electoral support, SVG GREEN PARTY. Then, there is the not very active, almost ‘invisible’, party formed by former YOULIMO supporter and leftist lawyer, JOMO THOMAS, along with ARWE’S Oscar ALLEN.

Of course, Ralphie would tell us that his Movement for National Unity (MNU) has ‘merged’ with the main ST. VINCENT LABOUR PARTY (SVLP) — though we are yet to have any such official public declaration, akin to the similar antic engaged in by the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM/ DFM). Both never formally, officially, come out and inform the general public of their political winding up, and ALLIANCE or MERGER, with their ‘benefactor’ fraternal party.

Did the POLITICAL PARTY of Messrs. ORMISTON “Ken” BOYEA and STANLEY K. “Stalkey” JOHN ever officially, formally or ceremonially inform the SVG public of their demise, closing of shop, or other notification of their impending state of being ‘defunct’ ?

E.T. and a friend of mine had RENAMED the People’s Political Party (PPP) as the PEOPLE’S NATIONAL MOVEMENT (SVG- PNM), and re-activated itself. I haven’t heard much, if anything, about this PNM for quite some time now. Incidentally, I was consulted and kept abreast of the change-over in these party names, at the time.

Trade Unionist BAYNES and co had formed their own party which has been in-active for many years now. Defunct ?
RANDOLPH RUSSEL and Dr. GIDEON CORDICE, and many others, had formed their own ST. VINCENT NATIONAL MOVEMENT. This has also been dormant for multiple years now. Defunct.

Of course, Mr. CALDER WILLIAMS had formed his own political party, too. Not noticeably active for years now. Defunct?

Ah wont tark ’bout Mitchie’s “GRAND CARIBBEAN” party ting. That would bring back memories of human wax pelted, and the later spiteful DESTRUCTION OF THE MARKET SQUARE and DESECRATION OF THE IRON MAN WAR MONUMENT — not to mention the removal of our capital City’s major central square.

The last or surviving functionaries in these long inactice parties need to properly inform the public and the media as to their true status, officially. Or, they close down business too suddenly for any official notices ? Why don’t they collectively host a media event and clarify, update, or historically inform the SVG public. Just for the records’ sake. Of course a few, certainly Jomo’s might still insist that they are not yet dead or defunct, and should not be discounted just yet. I would believe them. But, would they, as many as possible, kindly enlighten us?

For now, though, I would hazard the we have at least two currently “ALTERNATIVE” political PARTIES in SVG, viz., the GREEN PARTY, and Jomo’s. There is a sort of provisional movement for the setting up of yet another alternative political party congress in SVG called P.R.E.S.S., led by former NICE RADIO “Stay Awake” hosts, JUNIOR BACCHUS and MATTHEW THOMAS.

Tentively, I guess, we await the possibility, now, of Mrs. ANESIA BAPTISTE, nee Richards, either pioneering the formation of yet another newer alternative political party, or, JOINING ONE OF THE ALREADY EXISTING ALTERNATIVES.

Yes, we do already have one or more alternative political parties in SVG. We have frequently usually OFTEN had such. This is nothing new to our SVG political scene or landscape.

  20. Perhaps, for want of a familiar, SAFE, moniker, the aspiring political party founders could consider CLIVE RAIMEE’s ST. VINCENT NEW APPROACH PARTY (S.N.A.P.)
