33 years since La Soufrière erupted

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Today, Friday, April 13 — a “black Friday” — marks the 33rd anniversary of the most recent eruption of La Soufrière.

On Good Friday, April 13, 1979 – a “black Friday”, the volcano erupted, displacing 20,000 persons on mainland St. Vincent.

There were no reports of deaths although many citizens where still living in emergency shelters when the nation gained independence on Oct. 27 that year.

The volcano also erupted in 1718, 1812, 1902, and 1971.

The eruption of May 7, 1902 came just hours before the eruption of Mount Pelée on Martinique, which, killed 1,680 people.

According to the Trinidad-based University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre, La Soufrière is the youngest volcanic centre on St. Vincent.

It occupies the northernmost third of the island and is considered to be the only volcano on the island that is likely to erupt in the future, the centre says.

  2. Even as we speak, Mt. Etna in Italy is erupting violently. I remember like it was yesterday, that eruption of 1979 even though I was still in High School. Back then I did not realise how serious it was and the great danger that we as a nation faced. It was cool for me, and I had a lot of fun during that time(the ignorance of youth). Let’s pray that we never have another full scale eruption.

  3. The diagnostic center etc will be located pretty close to the volcano.I understand the politics of giving everything to your constituency but it’s not very prudent when those constituencies are located so close to soufriere that everything could be gone in an instant.Soufriere is still active, given the state of the economy most vincentians are praying that no hurricanes hit this year, soufriere doesn’t erupt. One has to thank GOD for his mercies, you would believe all these rampant rapes, crime, corruption would have brought down the Wrath of GOD on this nation by now

  4. There are published lists of Companies, Countries, Charities and wealthy local families who gave to the Volcano fund. Having studdied those lists, I can find no record of the wealthy Gonsalves family giving a cent.

  5. Or in the case of Donkey Gonsalves, a red cent.
