Eustace decries state of hospital ward

Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace says the floor at the Male Surgical Ward of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital should be repaired immediately (File photo)

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – The condition of the floor at the Male Surgical Ward of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) is “disgusting” and depressing, says Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace.

“They should do something about it now. It really is disgusting. I left that hospital really with a feeling of depression last Thursday,” Eustace said on radio Monday.

“As I left the hospital and I walked out of the male surgical ward, I looked at the holes in the linoleum or whatever they have on the floor there, it just disgusts me,” said Eustace, who went to visit patients at the hospital, the nation’s premier healthcare facility.

He said there were squares cut out of the flooring material at various places “and somebody jam some piece of thing to hold down something in a corner”.

According to him, the floor has been that way for a long time and is getting worse.

“[It] is not becoming of a hospital ward at all and I am sure that the nurses and so on who work there are not happy with that situation,” he said.

The situation at the ward, Eustace said, is “not the kind of environment that would help people to get well.

“It really is disgraceful and that piece should be changed and it should be changed now. Our hospital should have an ambience which speaks to people getting well, not to get more depressed apart from the illness.”

He said that the deteriorating section was obvious as soon as one enters the ward.

“It can’t cost that much to replace the material on the floor. … I know there are financial problems. and those problems were brought on by this government, but we must have some basic standards that we adhere to even with our financial problems,” said Eustace a former prime minister and finance minister.

“So many things need to be done. Yet you hear … Prime Minister [Dr. Ralph Gonsalves] talking all kind of foolishness about the finances of this country. … I mean you are so broke that you can’t do that?” Eustace said.

  2. Eustace SOUNDING real DESPERATE these DAYS, I wonder why.

Maybe because PEOPLE within his OWN PARTY and those who supported the NDP are TELLING him that it is TIME for HIM to go, like Frank Dasilva, Mathew Thomas and Junior Bacchus. Even Jomo Thomas is telling him that it is time for NEW BLOOD in the LEADERSHIP of the NDP.

I will end by quoting Jomo Thomas. “Whenever Eustace stands next to Gonsalves, the PM looks like a genius.”

    • Come on VINCY POWA what does this have to do with the state of the hospital ward? Frank Da Silva + Mathew Thomas+Junior Bacchus (- Jomo Thomas is a ULP man, so he don’t count), is only three votes who will not support ULP. So what exactly is the point you are making? Jomo Thomas is a washed up politician who is desperately trying to stay relevant. His word are like clanging symbols and tinkering brass(noise). No body takes him seriously. Eustace has reduced the majority of the ULP from 12-3 to 8-7. Are you ignoring this reality? You gotta be kidding right! You know that this is ULP distraction politics down the line. Poor people suffering in the hospital. Is Eustace lying or not? If not please let us stick to the issue and avoid this bullsh*tery!

  3. If people start contributing to the health facility then maybe we will have better healthcare. Firstly i could testify to the fact that people desist from paying their bills, everybody want everything free. I work at the institution and I have to pay. Arrears for hospitals bill could be millions as I write and don,t doubt the fact. What i’m saying is that let us be reasonable, don’t you think these outstanding payments could contribute greatly to healthcare and to our economy? You don’t have to force to pay all, at least contribute after all it is there for all of us vincentians. We all know the economy is tough at present but if it were into practice that we pay bills our hospital could have been better off today..

  4. VincyPowa you are one sick son of a bitch. You really are the worst kind of scum that Saint Vincent has ever produced.

Can you imagine we want to become a tourist destination. Hospital toilets filthy, no paper, bring your own. It reminds me of an Irish poem:
“When you enter this noble hall
use the paper not the wall
if no paper can be found
rub your arse along the ground”

We need to post some hospital photo’s so as the tourist know what they can expect if they need to go to hospital here.

Perhaps posting photo’s and telling of the non-existance of drugs and dressings, will encourage the Government to get the place fixed.

Do you remember last year Gonsalves spent a fortune on tiles at his official residence. It would of been better that money was spent on the floor of the hospital.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE HOSPITAL TOILETS, SULPHUR AS WELL

  5. No need talking all this politics. Go ahead and visit this place they call a general hospital and see the condition of it, then you will be inspired to try and make a differance. Not too long ago, I tried to get my father out of that male Surgical Ward to a better hospital to save his life but he did not make it. From what I witness there, they prepare the patients in that ward to die. The place is poorly equip and some of the doctors don’t seems to have a clue.

  7. James Mitchell, SCL and their FINANCIERS were RESPONSIBLE for the closeness of the 2010 general elections, just like how they were responsible for the referendum results.

Eustace had ZERO INFLUENCE in the Grenadines and he hardly had any INFLUENCE on the MAINLAND as well.

If for example, Louise Mitchell decides to form her own political party, the NDP will NOT win any of the Grenadines seats, period.

As a matter of fact, if Louise Mitchell runs on a ULP ticket in the Northern Grenadines, Godwin Friday will LOSE and Terrence Ollivierre will lose in the Southern Grenadines to the ULP candidate, PLAIN and SIMPLE.

So again, Eustace had nothing to do with the election results. He is just a FIGURE HEAD LEADER.

That said; Eustace is simply making a MOUNTAIN out of a MOLE as it relates to the issue at the hospital.

Now if Eustace was saying that people WERE NOT RECEIVING MEDICAL CARE and so that is “not the kind of environment that would help people to get well, then I can understand his concern. But this talk about squares cut out of the floor material will lead patients to feel DEPRESS is just PARTISAN POLITICAL talk.

It is UNFORTUNATE that this is all Mr. Eustace, the man who wants to GOVERN this BLESSED LAND, has been REDUCED to, talking about how squares cut out of the floor will lead to patients feeling depress.

I expect that kind of propaganda to come from an Ernesto Crooke or one of the other propagandists on the airwaves of Nice radio, but not from a man who is looking to LEAD this nation.

  9. VincyPowa I wish on you a period to be spent in the male surgical ward, where you will get the worst of treatment with a minimum of drugs and dressings, prepare to meet your doom.

You really deserve the worst of everything.

Warn any one who might visit you to bring their own toilet paper, and some sheets and pillow case for you. Now there lays a problem because we can be pretty sure that no one will visit you.

    Bye for now BUB

  10. Ever since I know that facility, I have never known of anyone who has gone there not getting toilet paper, sheets or pillow case, patients like to walk with their own. I frequent that facility and always get toilet paper every time I go to the washroom, so that is a big lie by the RALPH HATERS. Every month I go to the hospital’s pharmacy and received all my medications for a $5. stamp, except for one month when I didn’t get two of the six different drug prescribed.
The hospital is old now and I am very sure that the government will continue to do minor repairs as they pop up. The government is planning to build a completely new hospital in the Arnos Vale area soon after the opening of the Argyle International Airport.
Meanwhile the “Cassandras” will continue with their agenda…lol

  11. NO-NONSENSE basicly you are just a lying propoganist, you are obviously part of the evil Marxist regime.

People if you remember Gonsalves said there were no sheets or pillow cases because the staff stole them. Anyone with half a brain knows that hospital laundries are so harsh that towels sheets etc have a very limited life. The government should expect to replace everything twice a year, its a bonus if they last longer.

NO-NONSENSE go stick your head where the sun does’t shine, you silly boy.

  12. Remember the Gonsalves family would only use the place if they are waiting for an aeroplane to CUBA or elsewhere.

Even then the place would be cleaned and decorated in 20 minutes, prior to their arrival.

If its not good enough for them, its not good enough for us.

And remember Gonsalves said he only does ? [what did you say Gonsalves] for the Lord, so he dosn’t worry to much about the cemetary jumbies that we were told come from the cemetery next door.
