‘Don’t sic me on’ PM tells landlords

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Some landlord have begun to increase rent ahead of the implementation of the new property tax rates and Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said yesterday that these property owners should not use his name as “a battering ram”.

Gonsalves, in response a question at a press briefing, cited a Searchlight newspaper article in which some tenants complained that their landlords have already increased their rent, by as much as EC$100 a month in some instances.

Property owners will this year begin paying 0.08 per cent of the value of their property in tax, if the property is valued more than EC$25,000 on the market.

In some instances, the monthly increase in rent imposed on tenants is more than the landlord would pay additionally annually.

“What do they [landlords] say? ‘Didn’t you hear that Ralph increased property tax?’ So you are digging our people’s eye and you are using Ralph as a battering ram,” Gonsalves said, partly in dialect.

“Don’t use me as a battering ram. Don’t use De Comrade as a battering ram. It is dishonesty you are engaging in when you [are] putting up the rent and calling my name about property tax. Don’t do it,” Gonsalves further stated.

“And I am speaking to the tenants. When they come to you and tell you that, say, ‘You hear what De Comrade say?’,” Gonsalves said.

“Don’t use me as any whipping boy. Don’t sic me on pon anybody as though I am a bad dog. Don’t do that because I am none of that. What you sic’ing me on for? I’m some kind of mongrel? You can’t go ahead and do that. Be honest with people. We must expose these people you know,” Gonsalves said.

He further stated that his government would have to review the Rent Act to protect the rights of both landlords and tenants.

“It has to be done in a sensible and practical manner because at the lower end or the lower-middle end, the demand for rooms exceeds the supply of rooms,” he said.

Gonsalves further stated that in some Kingstown communities, landlords charge “an arm and a leg” because of the proximity to the city.

“So they feel that they have you, the tenant; they can take you for a ride. But we have to make sure that we are being fair to the landlords and we are being fair to the tenants,” he said.

  1. Gonsalves your smoke screen tactics are becoming boring. Qit the crap and hush your mouth, why you keep generating these tales which again are tountermount to telling yet more lies.

Many people cannot pay rent because government not paying them on time or at all.

Now you lying on the landlords.

How about ALBA, thats what you need to tell us about, show us all the agreements and contracts you have lumbered the Vincentian people with.

Quit the crap and get real.

  3. That’s just what would happen (landlords increasing rent and tenants crying out) because of Gonsalves’ mismanagement and squandering of this country’s limited resources. Has he forgotten that he has increased everything while salaries remain unchanged or are not being paid? I decry the actions of landlords but at the same time Gonsalves should not act as though he has nothing to do with it.

  5. Who should any government dictate how much I should demand for my services or products? Let the market handle these issues. People can pay or refuse to pay. That would send the correct message to business people. This communist approach is wrong and dictatorial.

  7. Folks regardless to what Gonsalves does and regardless to some people hardship they will still curse you for ‘DE comrade’. There are people who ready to suffer politically for the sake of their party. For my part I dont care who run the nation because NDP was there for quite some time and now its ULP time. Now forgetting about partisian affairs. The question is, in which ERA vincentian is faced with the most hardship in terms of jobs, food, rent, morgage, utility bills and crimes? Is it NDP ERA or ULP ERA? In which ERA SVG is faced with the most expenses and Depth? In which ERA SVG lost their national bank, national marketing board, their treasury and NIS broken and their public works privatise? In which ERA Grenadinians have to pay tax to go home? In which ERA the Airport is going to finish to repay all this nation bankruptcy? How many innocent unborn generation have to pay this depth?
Any response to these question should be focus on SVG and not on some ‘shite’ about the world economy and other countries.Yes the world economy crisis will have impact on certain things but not every thing. Just think about how China manage their economy. Most of what is taking place here is done by who running this nation not by leaders of other countries.
